Volunteered March 4, 1862, Company G, 52nd Georgia Infantry, Private. On payroll April 13, 1862 at Blairsville, Georgia. Sworn in by Captain Lewis B. Beard for three years. Paid $50.00.

On muster roll August 31 to December 31, 1862. Last paid by Captain Johnson August 31, 1862. Elected 2nd Corp November 14, 1862.

2nd Corp, Company G, 52nd Regiment, on muster roll Jan and Feb 1863. Last paid by Captain Logan Dec 31, 1862.

Company muster roll Nov and Dec 1863 last paid by Captain Thompson October 31, 1863.

James A. Satterfield appears on a roll of prisoners of war paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi according to the terms of capitulation entered into by the commanding Generals of the United States and Confederate forces July 4, 1863. Paroled at Vicksburg, Miss., July 6, 1863.

James A. Satterfield appears on a roll of prisoners of war received at military prison, Louisville, Kentucky during five days ending July 2, 1864. Roll dated July 21, 1864. Captured at Chattahoochie July 10, 1864 from Nashville, discharged July 18, 1864. Sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois July 18, 1864, arrived July 20, 1864. Transferred April 15, 1865, enlisted in 5th U.S. Volunteer Infantry April 15, 1865.

Applied for oath of allegiance December, 1864, says captured at Chattahoochie River near Atlanta July 10, 1864 "Claims to have been loyal. Was conscripted in the Rebel Army. Deserted to avoid himself of the amnesty proclamation".

On POW roll at Nashville, Tn, captured by forces under Major General W.T. Sherman, commanding Military Division of the Mississippi and forwarded to Captain S.E. Jones, A.D.C., Louisville, Ky, July 17, 1864.

I, James A. Satterfield, 2nd Corp of Company G, 52, Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, Confederate States of America, being a prisoner of war, in the hands of the United States Forces in virtue of the capitulation of the city of Vicksburg and its garrison, by Lieut. Gen John C. Pemberton, C.S.A., Commanding, on the 4th day of July 1863, do in pursuance of the terms of said capitulation give this my solemn parole under oath.
That I will not take up arms again against the United States, nor serve in any military police, or constabulary force in any Fort, Garrison, or field work, held by the Confederate States of America, against the United States of America, nor as guard of prisoners, depots or stores, nor discharge any duties usually performed by officers or soldiers, against the United States of America, until duly exchanged by the proper authorities.

Commodore Decatur Epps, brother of Sirena, wounded 9-17-1863 at Chicamauga, died of wounds. Co. F., 6th Regiment, Georgia Calvary Volunteers. Sirena, who was 18 years old at the time of his death, named her first son Commodore in his honor.
