4. HARVEY HENSON3 HINES (JOHN HENRY2, JOHN CARAWAY1) was born November 04, 1890 in Carter, Pontatoc, Indian Territory, and died January 31, 1977 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He married VERTIE BELL CHAMPION January 14, 1912 in near Maud, Oklahoma. She was born November 04, 1890 in Carter, Pontatoc, Indian Territory, and died January 31, 1977 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Notes for H
ARVEY HENSON HINES:
According to Thelma Hines, the land surrounding the Hines Homestead (the "Red Hill") was sold to oil companies for a considerable amount of money, and each of the Hines children got a portion of that money. According to Lloyd Hines' daughter, Barbara, a $15,000 deposit showed up in her grandfather's (Oscar Hines) bank account about the time of the sale. I never new my grandfather to have a "job", perhaps that is why. Harvey Henson Hines lived in what became Pottawatomie County for all of his life except for the 6 years he lived near Norman. After marrying Vertie Bell Champion in 1912, they lived on a farm near St. Louis, Oklahoma. They moved to Shawnee in 1929 and lived on Jefferson Place. He was a partner in the Hines-Gentry Motor Company and Olds mobile Agency in 1940-42. Sylvia Hines said they bought their interest in the company with a $1,000 gift from Vertie's father. He and his two sons Noel and Don purchased Herb Gentry's portion of the business and building and ran the Hines Motor Company selling Jeeps and Minneapolis Moline tractors. They moved to a farm near the Hines Homestead in Asher in the early 1950's. I remember spending summers there and spending time with my cousins Ted, Barbara, Mike, Suzie, and Deanna. From there they moved to a farm in Tecumseh and stayed there a few years then moved to a farm in Bethel. From Bethel they moved back to Shawnee. They lived in two houses on Independence street. At the time of his death, Harvey lived at 1202 E. Independence. He died only a few days before his grand daughter Kimberly was born. He died of a stroke.

According to a newspaper release given to me by Myrna Dixon-St. George, W.R. Hines lived in Hemphill county Texas since 1907. He had suffered with a heart ailment for the past few years and had had several heart attacks. On Oct. 9, 1955 he died of a heart attack. Relatives in Shawnee, Oklahoma planned to drive to Canadian the next day. They called W.R.'s brother, Oscar, and told him they would be by to pick him up in about fifteen minutes. When they arrived at Oscar's house, they found him dead of a heart attack also. Heart attacks had taken both brothers in less than twenty-four hours.

According to his obituary, William Richard Hines was born in Leon County, Texas on April 4, 1881. He was married to Miss Bertha Elizabeth Curnutt on January 30, 1904, at Romulas, Oklahoma. They moved to Canadian in 1907 and farmed in Washita community. Mr. Hines was a faithful member of the First Methodist church. At the time of his death he was still engaged in farming and ranching at his place seven miles this side of Miami, Texas.

Notes for S
TELLA BEATRUS HINES:
According to Jimmie Yeats, Stella Beatrus Hines was born in the community by the name of Wilson, seven mile southeast of Ardmore. At the age of 7 she came to Pottawatomie County from Carter County with her parents where they settled near Pearson and a short time later moved to near Maud. She first started to school in Pott. County going to a one room school by the name of Colverdale, located near Oak Grove. In 1910, the year of her marriage she and her new husband moved into the town of Asher. They lived there for several years and were thought to have later moved to St. Louis about 1920. In 1923, they moved to Hughes County, in Oklahoma in a Model-T Ford. They settled near the town of Dustin and a few years later bought a ranch. They built their home in 1929 and worked and lived there for another 30 years. She adhered to the Democratic party unlike her husband who was a staunch Republican. They both belonged to the Baptist Church. A branch called the "Primitive Baptist". They attended annual week long sessions held at various homes of members of the church. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday August 28, 1960 at their home place. Attending were their children and grandchildren, which numbered 18 at the time. Also attending were many friends and neighbors.

The following is a story that Jimmie Yeats said was written by his grandmother, Stella beatrus Hines shortly after they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, August 28, 1960: On August 28, 1910, V.A. called for me about 8:30 A.M. for us to get married. Well, I wasn't ready, he had to wait on me, so he's been waiting on me ever since. Anyway, I got dressed and ready to go. We got in the buggy and started out. I believe the buggy was pulled by two mules, on mule was a little larger than the other, and the larger on had an "inguloned" foot which gave him a slight limp. But we were happy. We drove to a Church of Christ Minister's country home, and were married before about a dozen people. I shook like a leaf. So after the ceremony we drove around the rest of the morning coming back to my parents home where mama had a bountiful dinner. She was a wonderful cook. In the afternoon we attended a funeral of two little girls age 10 and 12 who drowned while wading in a creek. Monday morning we drove to a little town by the name of Asher, Oklahoma where V.A's father lived, there we rented a two room house, bought some new and used furniture and set up house keeping. Starting our life's struggle together, but a happy life, isn't all roses, we have to have a few thorns and a little bitter with the sweet to be made to appreciate the good things of life. We reared five children of which we are very proud of and love very much. They are all married and gone from home. After 50 years we are still struggling together and happy!

Thank You.

She married SAMUEL LEWIS DIXON October 30, 1901 in St. Louis, Pottowattomie, Indian Territory. He was born May 02, 1882 in Fayetteville, Tennessee, and died 1954.

Notes for L
ULA EMMA HINES:
Sam had to drop out of the fourth grade in Tecumseh because there was not enough money to buy textbooks. He lived with his sister Sarah Ellen and her husband, John Woody. Sam helped with farming and traveled with harvest crews. Sam played the fiddle and while at a barn dance celebrating the end of the harvest, he met Lula Ema Hines. He told his brother-in-law that she was the girl he was going to marry. One year later he entered into a conspiracy with a friend to keep Lula so busy that they would crowd out the attentions of her then present beau. After that, he courted Lula one year and they were married on October 30, 1901. Sam owned two horses and Lula owned a side saddle. So, Sam borrowed a buggy to ride to the preacher's house for the wedding. Sam and Lula leased a farm, had one team, a wagon and one cow. He borrowed one hundred dollars on his crop and bought all the necessary furniture, dishes, groceries, supplies, wedding suit, marriage license, etc. He farmed there for three years.

In 1905 Sam moved his wife and two daughters, Bertha Mae and Lily Pear, to Beaver County, Oklahoma near Guymon, which is now in Texas County. He moved his family in two covered wagons. Here he filled on a homestead of 160 acres in the "Two circle Pasture" territory. To supplement his income, he did carpentry work, blacksmithing and went through Kansas with the harvest crews. They raised broom corn and lived in a half-dugout located thirty-seven miles from town. Sam dug one of the first water wells in the area by tying his lariat rope to Lula's quilting frames and lashing them to post hole diggers. The well was thirty feet deep. Marvin and Rhea were born on this homestead.

After a terrible blizzard in 1912, in which they lost all of their cattle and almost their own lives, they sold their land for $1,000 and moved to Hemphill County, Texas. They forded streams and crossed the Canadian River in their two covered wagons. they rented a farm where Oleta was born. They then moved to a farm near Allison, Texas where Myrl was born. They then bought a 320 acre farm for $5,280 to be paid off in twenty years. This was their last home and is where Wilda was born. Marvin lives of the home farm and raises registered hogs and has served as County Commissioner of Hemphill County. Bertha Mae, the eldest child, married Ewell Steen and they had no children. They raised thirteen foster children. Ewell was a mechanic and Betha was postmistress of Briscoe for several years. They reside in Clarendon. Lily married Pat Terry and she and her infant son died in childbirth before Christmas 1928.
