Among our ancestors are some of the earliest European immigrants to the New World. Our family tree include colorful chracters like Anneke Jans, Jan Roeloffs, Domine Everardus Bogardus, Sarah Roeloffse-Kierstead, Dr. Hans Kierstead, Marinus Van Aken, John Howe, Baxter Howe, Timothy, Titus, Bezaleel & Darius Howe, Juan Antonio Carrillo, Juaquin Murietta, General Mariano Vallejo and Leo Carrillo. They came from the Netherlands, Spain, Norway, England, Scotland, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Frisia and Friesland. As with so many whose families have lived in North America more than 100 years, it is possible, even likely, that Algonquin Indians of the Mahican, Delaware and Shawnee tribes also form branches of our family tree.
We also participate in "Living History" reenactments. "Mountain Man Rendezvous" and Civil War reenactments are some of our favorite vacation activities. These activities provide us an opportunity to experience life as our ancestors lived it.
Our other hobbies fit well with these interests. Barbara enjoys creating period costumes. Clyde enjoys working in wood, leather and metal to create accessories, tools, furniture, etc. for use at various encampments and reenactments.
The period of the American Western Fur Trade - 1803 to 1840 - has been the primary focus of our interest to date. However, in the last two years we have expanded our interests to various historical periods from 1600 to 1900. We are presently developing personas based on our ancestors from the early history New Amsterdam, Massechusets and California.
Surnames we are researching include: Alford, Babcock, Baker, Barron, Beckman, Benson, Bogaert, Bogardus, Bowker, Brigham, CARRILLO, Corneliszen, Damen, Dane, De Pree, Dirckszen, Doremus, Foster, Gall, Hampton, Harrison, Helms, Henderson, Hendricks, Hennigan, Hicks, Hitt, Hitts, Hosmer, HOWE, Jans, Jansen, Janssen, Johnson, Jones, Kierstead, Kierstede, Kip, Leiser, Lookermans, Patten, Peterson, Pfeffer, Popkin, Reeves, Rents, Rice, Roeloffs, Roeloffse, Roeloffsen, Roeloffson, Rowe, Sleight, Terpenning, Treadway, Tyler, Van Aken, Van Auken, Van Buran, Van Benschoten, Van Buren, Van Maesterland, Van Ruyteveld, Vanderveen, Von Dorsteadt, Von Schierstedte, Wetherbee, and Whitmore.
If you share our interests, we would be delighted to hear from you, particularly if you share our ancestry or heritage. We would count it a privilege to share with you the rich personal reward derived from exchanging the fruits of our mutual research. Expanding our circle of "cousins" and friends has become one of the richest rewards of all.
