FRONT PAGE HEADLINE: "PHARIS HOWERTON ACCIDENTLY SHOOTS SELF"
SUB-HEADLINE: "Shoots Self In Stomach While Taking Gun Out of Crib. Dies Within a Few Hours"

A sad Thanksgiving was spent at the home of the Howerton's on Shoal Creek near Wheaton caused by the accidental shooting of Pharis Howerton when he attempted to take a shot gun through a crack in the corn crib on the farm.
Pharis is the 28 year old son of Alex Howerton and was living near his father since he and family returned from California a few months ago. During the early morning his father had taken the gun and gone out to some traps that had been set to catch rabbits and on returning had been told by his son that all the feeding had been done with the exception of feeding the hogs. The elder Howerton went into the crib, taking the gun with him and leaning it up against the wall and commenced shucking corn to feed the hogs. Pharis wanting to use the gun reached through a crack and was drawing the gun with the barrel toward him and in some way the hammer caught on the board and was raised far enough to cause the gun to discharge when it fell, Pharis receiving the full charge of the load in his stomach. He made his way to the house and physicians were summoned, but the charge had severed some of the intestines and they were unable to give him much relief and expressed the belief that he would live but a few hours. The accident occurred between 8 and 9 o'clock in the morning and he lived until about 3 o'clock.
Funeral services were held Sunday and was attended by the largest crowd that had ever assembled at a funeral at the New Hope church. Interment was made in the Clark cemetary

HEADLINE: ALEX HOWERTON DIES VERY SUDDENLY FROM A BROKEN       HEART IN MUSKOGEE, OKLA
SUB-HEADLINE: Shooting Declared Accidentally by His Son Who Lived But       Few Hours After Happening

Alexander Howerton, charged with first degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his son, Pharis Howerton, who was killed on November 26, 1925, when a gun in the hands of his father was discharged while the two men were in a field near their home, seven miles southwest of Purdy, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grover Overton, in Muskogee, Okla.
Word received here Friday announced that Howerton, who was to be tried at Cassville during the March term of Barry county circuit court, was found dead in bed by the daughter. Heart disease was said by physicians in Muskogee to have been the cause of death.
The shooting of Young Howerton took place on the father's farm last November and was considered for several weeks as an accident. First reports were that Howerton shot his son when he handed him a shot gun, which was discharged accidentally when the father passed it to his son, from a corn crib.
Young Howerton lived several hours after being wounded and told members of his family and physicians that the shooting was accidental, no idea of murder being advanced at that time.
                  Charge Filed Later
Later a rumor that Howerton had murdered his son was circulated and a charge of murder was filed against the father, resulting in the elder Howerton's arerst (sic) in Denver Colo., where he had gone with another son, Fred Howerton. The father returned from Colorado without the necessity of Barry county officers accompanying him and surrendered himself to Hugh Brixey, sheriff of Barry county.
At a preliminary hearing held in Monett, Howerton was bound over to the March term of Barry county circuit court. He was allowed bond and left Monett a short time later to visit his daughter in Muskogee.
Public opinion in the region near Howerton's home favored the man, who was not generally thought guilty of murder. He was a member of one of Barry county's oldest families and considered as a hardworking and fair man, never having been charged with any type of crime prior to the death of his son.
Howerton's body arrived in Monett Friday night, accompanied by the daughteer at whose home he died in Muskogee. Funeral services will probably be held Sunday afternoon from the home of a brother, C. C. Howerton, near Wheaton, where the body was taken the night it arrived in Monett.
In company with his son, he was preparing to drive from Muskogee to his farm the following day and wired relatives to expect him. A short time thereafter the death telegram was received by them.
A recent Associated Press dispatch from Muskogee, Okla., states that Muskogee physicians who attended Mr. Howerton, after his death, stated that the killing of his son had preyed on the aged man's mind so greatly that he died from a broken heart.
Howerton's body arrived at his home last Friday and was intered in the Clark cemetary, after funeral services which were conducted by Rev. C. M. Smith of Exeter.
