Notes for W
ILLIAM HOWDEN:
Source Notes: William was listed along with George Howden (relationship not indicated) in the 1835 Tithe Records of the Diocese of Clogher, Parish of Derryvullen, Townland of Tisbleaven, in the Baroney of Magheraboy (recorded in the National Library of Ireland). There were a number of families named Noble listed in the vicinity which probably explains the frequent use of the Noble given name within the family. A letter written by Jack Stewart on March 30, 1949 indicated: "I learned that when the Howden family came to Canada they settled in the county of Peel at Mono Mills. There were also Robert and James Jackson and the Carsons. A sister of grandfather Howden married James Jackson and they were the parents of Fred Roy Bennetto, President of Wood-Alexander and James, Ltd. The Carsons lived near Meaford, and the Jacksons moved up close to Palmerston, where the family lived for many years". The William Howden family is listed in the City of Toronto Home District Commercial Directory for 1837; they were listed as occupying Lot 31, Concession 2, Albion Township. Census records did not reflect names until 1861. The 1861 census for Warwick Township, Lambton County, Ontario reflects William as being 85 years old (born in 1776) and born in Ireland he is listed along with his wife: Jane: age 75 (born 1876) and son: John.

Source Data: Jane Balfour Howden died in childbirth with the birth of her twins John and Mary Jane on May 18, 1825 according to at least 3 sources: son Samuel's biography; son John's obituary, and Jack Stewart's research in County Fermanagh and Monea Anglican Church. Martha Parker traveled to Monea and performed research which duplicated this data. A second Jane, married to William was listed in the 1861 census for Lambton County, Ontario indicating that the second Jane, was 75 years old (born in 1786 very similar to Jane Balfour); religious affiliation was also: Church of England and born in Ireland. No record of the second Jane's maiden name or date and place of marriage could be located.

Mary Jane, daughter of William Howden and Jane Balfour, was christened on the 17th day of June 1830 according to the Devonish Parish Church Records. Most of her older siblings were christened at the Monea Anglican Church.
