7. SAMUEL3 HOWDEN (JAMES2, WILLIAM1) was born August 15, 1843 in 40 miles N of Toronto, in Canada West (later Ontario), and died Aft. 1900. He married HESTER CUMMINS October 03, 1870 in Hamilton Township, La Crosse Co, WI, daughter of GEORGE CUMMINS and ROSANNA MCMULLEN.

Source Data: The Biographical History of Clark and Jackson Counties, Wisconsin, dated 1891, reflected his birthday as 15 Aug 1843 and birth place as Canada West, 40 miles north of Toronto, Canada pages 322-323. Canada West later became the province of Ontario. In addition the Biography also included the date of his marriage to Hester on October 3, 1870. The 1861 census of Lambton County, Ontario reflected his age at 20 yrs old; occupation: laborer. The 1880 Eaton Township Census in Clark County, Wisconsin indicated his age at 36 years old, occupation: farmer. The Greenwood City, Clark County, WI directory lists Sam's occupation as Town Clerk. The census for 1900 in Eaton township, Clark Co, Wisconsin reflected his age at 66 years old; that Samuel was born in Canada and emigrated to the US in 1863. It stated that he was born in August 1843, and that both of his parents were born in Ireland. The state census for 1905 in Eaton Township, Clark County, Wisconsin revealed that he was 61 years old; a farmer, and born in Canada. A deed dated 19 Oct 1907 revealed that they sold their 80 acre farm in Section 15, Eaton Township, Clark County, WI. Both Sam and Hester appears to have signed the document. No evidence was located as to their destination following the sale. Sam and Hester were listed in the Greenwood City Methodist Church Membership Log; the log did not contain a date.

Source Notes: Hester's marriage on October 3, 1870 to Samuel was published on page 323 of the Biographical History of Clark and Jackson Counties. Hester was listed in the census for 1880 in Eaton Township, along with her husband, and her age was reflected as 29 years old. The 1900 Census for Eaton Township, Clark Co, WI reflected her birthday as November 1850, and she was 49 years old. Her birth place, as well as her parents birth place was listed as New York State. The state census for 1905 in Eaton Township, Clark Co, Wi revealed that Hester was 54 years old (born 1851). She was listed in the Greenwood City Methodist Church Log.

He married (1) SARAH ANN RUTLEDGE December 21, 1874 in Warwick, Lambton Co, ON, CDA, daughter of THOMAS RUTLEDGE and JANE KENNEDY. He married (2) ALICE JANE NICOLL September 03, 1907 in Sutton, Griggs Co, ND.

Data Sources: The census for 1861 in Lambton County, Ontario reflected his age at 8 years (born in 1853); born in Canada. The census for 1871 in Lambton County reflected his age at 20 years (born in 1851); born in Canada, occupation: laborer. Later moved to Dakota.
      The following obituary was printed in the Watford Guide on May 16, 1919, and the Cooperstown, ND Sentinel: William Howden, pioneer farmer, and one of the best known citizens of Griggs County, died at his home in Sutton, North Dakota, on Monday, April 28th, 1919 at 3:18AM from congestion of the lungs the result of a cold contracted while taking a shipment of cattle to the St Paul markets some three weeks previous.
      Deceased had never before been sick a day in his life and felt that with his usually customary vigor he could easily throw off the cold, but about a week before his death, while preparing to load another shipment of cattle in Sutton, he complained of feeling worse, and went home to rest. The cold, which had developed into lung congestion, had reduced his vitality and he grew gradually weaker to the end, passing away quietly and without pain, surrounded by his wife, family and friends, at age of 68 years, 4 months and 26 days.
      William Howden was born in Wentworth County, Ontario, Dec 2, 1850, where he grew to manhood. On Dec 21st, 1874 he was united in marriage at Warwick, Ontario, to Sarah Ann Rutledge, and to this union were born five children: Richard J., of St Paul, Minn; Jane (Mrs F W Rothart) of Minot, ND;Samuel George on the farm in Clearfield township; Frank L in Canadian Army at Ripon, England and Edith Ellen, (Mrs. WA Olmsted) of Robsart, Sask.
      In the spring of 1883, the family moved to the old homestead in Griggs County, where deceased had resided ever since, until last fall, when a home was purchased in Sutton and where he resided with his wife until death claimed him.
      The first Mrs. Howden passed away on the old homestead May 21st, 1904. On Sept 3rd, 1907, deceased was married to Alice Jane Nicoll, who survives him, together with three brothers, Samuel of Beach, ND; James of Mossbank, SD and BN of Mabel Township; two sisters also survive: Mrs LL Nicoll of McHenry and Mrs Andrew Hemerlin, of Binford.
      (The late Mr. Howden was a cousin of Mr. W.J. Howden of Watford, and visited him here a couple of years ago.)

Notes: From the records of Lasarian McAllister. Sarah had a large goiter which eventually caused her death according to Ralph Howden. She was buried in the Garry Luther Cemetery, 5 miles from Hartman County; it has a nice stone and fenced lot in good shape in 2001.

10. THOMAS JAMES3 HOWDEN (SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1) was born July 19, 1846 in Toronto, Peel Co, Ontario, and died April 13, 1907 in Lambton Co, ON. He married HELEN ELLEN MCELWAIN Abt. 1874 in Ontario, Canada.

Source Data: Thomas was listed in the 1861 census for Lambton County, Ontario, age 16 (born 1845). The 1871 Lambton County, Ontario census listed him as 24 years old (born 1847), occupation: carpenter. A Thomas Howden was listed in the Greenwood City, Clark County, Wisconsin directory (undated), also as a carpenter. It may be that he followed Samuel Howden to Clark County, Wisconsin for a time, although he was once again found in Lambton County in 1881. The 1881 Lambton County, Ontario Census listed him as 34 years old (born 1847), he is listed along with his wife and one child. The 1891 Watford Township, Lambton County, Ontario census listed him as 44 years old (born 1847); he was listed along with his wife: Helen, their two children: Emma A (age 15) and Walter Lorne (age 10) as well as Helen's sister: Sarah 27 years old (born 1864). Thomas died 13 Apr 1907, age 60 years and 9 months. Tombstone in Watford Cemetery, Lambton Co, Ontario reads: " At Rest In memory of Thomas J. Howden Died Apr 13, 1907 in his 61st Year".
      The Watford Guide Advocate published the following on June 15, 1984: Mr. Thos. Howden, who was awarded the contract for the erection of the Public School, commenced work on the new building last Thursday. The building will be one of the largest in this section of the country. The contract price being $7393, exclusive of furnaces. From the high reputation of the contrctor as a reliable and first--class mechanic, there is no doubt the work will be done in the most satisfactory and approved manner, and when completed will be a credit both to the town and the contractor.
