Notes for JOHN BOWERS: John Bowers was conscripted into Co F, 5th regt. NCST 34 of the Confederate Army. After having served just a few months he died 16 Dec. 1862 in Mount Jackson Va. from an illness he contracted while on active duty. He was buried in a common grave along with some 360 other Confederate soldiers who died in that Hospital. My son Richard Howard has visited the Confederate memorial that was established ln MT Jackson to honor the soldiers who died there. When the Union Army captured MT. Jackson they disassembled the Confederate Hospital and used the material to build an Officers Club. This small town has turned the Confederate memorial into a tourist attraction and it is beautifully maintained. |
