Notes for M
ARTIN M. BOWERS:
Martin married three times, however all his children were born to him and S. Jane Lothorpe, his first wife. Together, they had nine children, three girls and six boys. They made their home on land that Jane inherited. Their old home place is at the corner of Cappadocia Church Road and Kiker Road. The only remaining visual signs of the house site are two pear trees in the middle of the field. Her property extended down Bower's road, the Joseph C. and James W. Bowers home places are a portion of that land. Jane died at the age of 53. Joe was only 12 years old at the time of his mother's death. Shortly after her death he went and lived with his older brother Fulton and his wife. He remained with them until he was a grown man.

Martin's second wife was named Sally Ashford; she was married previously and had two children from her first marriage. She is buried in a cemetery in Polkton, NC. Her date of birth was Feb 5, 1861 and died Feb 3, 1916.

His third wife was named Lou Meggs. She also died before martin and by this time he was an old Man. He lived out the last years of his life at his son, Joseph C. Bower's home. He was 86 years old when he died.

Martin referred to Jane as his true love, Sally as his wife and Lou as his companion.

He is buried in the Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery Burnsville, Anson County, NC
