Notes for J
OSEPH CLEVELAND BOWERS:
Joseph C. Bowers was Martin and Jane's youngest son. Joe married a local girl named Lougenia Maness. They had five children, two boys and three girls. Their home, Located on Bowers road is well known to all the living children and grand children. As a young man, he went into the Saw Milling Business. He boarded a large number of his hired helpers in a bunkhouse that was attached to the family residence. (That portion of the home was torn down many years ago.) Some of those men were black. He was respected and loved by all his helpers. Lougenia with the help of her daughters Wilma, Lucy and daughter in law Alma cooked the meals and did the house hold chores that were necessary to take care of this large, extended family. One of the real disappointments in their later years was when their barn burned. They had lumber stored in the barn to build a new home. Also, all the food for their livestock was destroyed, which in those days was a real disaster. Joe died at the age of 56, with complications from sugar diabetes.
Lougenia lived for more than 33 years after Joe's death and died at the age of 91. The famous Bowers temper that many of their descendants are accused of having is in reality, a Maness temper. Joe had a very even disposition; Lougenia on the other hand could get hot in a hurry, according to some of her living children. She kept a shotgun handy in case a Fox or Chicken Hawk showed up at the farm. One morning while her grand daughters were waiting on the school bus, a Fox came into the yard; she got her gun and shot the fox just as the school bus arrived. This embarrassed the girls, but they laugh about it today.
