BENTON M. HOWARD

Benton M. Howard was born June 25, 1871 in Anson County, NC and died May 5, 1955 in Union County, NC. He is the son of James A. and Rebecca Allen Howard. He was married twice; he had one child Martin Lee Howard with his first wife Arwilder Williams and 13 children with his second wife Julia C. Edwards. Ben and Julia raised their family on a farm located on HW 205 three miles east of New Salem, NC. Their farm was located on the banks of the beautiful Rocky River. Some of this land was extremely hilly and was used mostly for pastures. The bottomland was flat and extremely fertile and was used primarily for row crops and grain. He had several brothers that lived in the area. Thomas Arthur Howard (his baby brother) owned a farm less than a mile from him and he had other brothers that lived across the river in Stanly County.

Ben and Julia were members of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for many years but later in life he had a dispute with the church and they moved their membership to Antioch Baptist Church on Morgan Mill road. All indications are they were both religious people who lived their beliefs. He did not believe in consuming alcohol and would not tolerate the use in his house or on their property. This is a direct quote from his grandson John B. Howard. "G Paw was a very strict man all his life and was dedicated to his family and God. He lived by the book and I never heard him cuss. He hated spirits with a great passion. During the 30's some of his brothers make whiskey to drink and he would call the Sheriff and allow him to watch from his barn loft while attempting to catch the violators".

Hart Howard, Ben's nephew told stories in later years about how hard Ben and his family worked. He said during full moons when there was light and work needed to be done in the fields you could hear them calling Gee and Haw to the mules as late as 11;00 PM at night. He had three mules and their names were Mike, Bonn and Beck (according to a newspaper article written by Heath Thomas one of his friends)

Mrs. Julia did not drive Automobiles so she would take the Buggy to visit her son Hugh and his family in Oakboro (4 miles away). Their grandson John loved to ride in the Buggy and would often go home with his Grandmother for visits of a week or more. He would swim and fish in Rocky River. Those good times have left memories that John will always cherished and remember as long as he lives. Mrs. Julia was a sweet, friendly person who was very organized. (You have to be organized to feed 13 children) During meals all her vegetables had their own individual bowls that she served them from. If a visitors were helping her cook and put the beans or potatoes in the wrong bowl she would dump them out and put them in the correct bowl, potatoes in the potato bowl, beans in the bean bowl, etc.

Julia died before Ben and he was left in this large house mostly by his self. When Heath Thomas wrote the newspaper article about Ben he refers to the deafening silence that was coming from the house during his visit. Julia had passed away and the children were all gone? One can imagine how much life, laughter; tears and joy there must have been when there was 13 children at home. When Heath Thomas questioned Ben about three of the mules he had once owned Mike, Bonn and Beck, Ben remained silent for several moments and then when he finally spoke about the mules he had tears in his eyes.
