Wilhelm Auge Hoyer ran away from Trondheim, Norway at the age of 16. He hired on as a sailor on a whaler and jumped ship in Canada. There he learned to speak English by reading the bible. Because he ran away from home, little is known of the Hoyer family in Norway, other than they probably were upper or upper-middle class. This comes from a family picture (possibly a wedding) showing a number of people who appear to be dignitaries. I don't have any record showing birth dates or death dates for Wilhelm Auge Hoyer. His siblings all remained in Norway as far as I know. Wilhelm was married in Chicago and both he and his wife died and were buried in Chicago. Her maiden name was Caroline Rieck, and she was born in Chicago. She died in late 1938 or early 1939.
Wilhelm Hoyer's siblings were Thor, Mark, Kristine and Marin. The family lived in Trondheim, Norway (Sør-Trøndelag). Caroline Rieck's siblings were Peter, William, Henry, Louis, Charles and two more boys whose names I don't have.
Since Wilhelm walked across the border from Canada somewhere, he probably got his citizenship papers in Chicago. Mark Hoyer Sr. was born in 1899, the youngest of six children, so you can see that Wilhelm probably arrived in the U.S. in the 1870-80 timeframe.
