Catharine's surname may be Goodman as found in Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree Volume 2 family #3137 or Gutmann, which would be the German spelling.

She is still listed in the 1833 Phila. Directory page 117 as: "Kugler wid Catharine gentw 89 Callowhill" (Directory possibly a reprint from earlier years, like 1821-23 are reprints of 1820.)

Third message. Jake's obit mentions that Jacob was a Revolutionary War participant. I found his pension application and ordered a copy of it from the US gov. He swore to the application in 1832 in Monroe Co., KY; in it he states that he joined the army (or infantry) in Mecklenberg Co.,NC. I searched records in MEcklenberg Co. and found Goodmans, Christopher and Michael, for the 1770s and also found mention of a will for a Michael Goodman. I ordered a film copy of it from LDS Family Center; the film copy was hard to read, and my photo copy is too. I recommend that you order it from LDS to see for yourself. I will send you the order information if I can find it. I have "translated" it; if you want it, I will send it to you--I don't stand behind the accuracy ("s" looks like "f" and other things, making it difficult to read). The will was dated Feb. 17, 1777, in Mecklenberg Co. Michael named his wife, Elisabeth (Semens)and his sons (in chronological order, I believe because the last two he says are still in the home): Christopher, Michael, Jacob, George, and John. He also mentions daughters, but does not name them. Having found no other Jacob in Mecklenberg Co., I am assuming that Michael's Jacob is the same Jacob in Ky later. Of course, that could be wrong; Jacob could have come from another county to join the army, or never appeared on any other records in Mecklenberg Co. But I think that we are fairly secure in believing that our Jacob is Michael's son. I later found a book "William Scott of Cabarrus Co., NC" by Carol S. Scott, a descendant's wife who discusses the Goodmans in Mecklenberg Co. She said that Michael and Christopher Andreas, his brother, came from PA; she found a statement by Pastor Nicholas Adam Marcard in the records of Organ (Zion) church (now in Cabarrus Co, NC,was in Mecklenberg Co. then) that gave information about Christopher's birth, marriages, and children, stating that he was born in "Alsophe in the Palatinate, April 5, 1719." Both Michael and Christopher are mentioned as founders of Organ church. Mrs. Scott's book also led me to PA where Michael and Christopher are mentioned in church records in PA(see "The Schoolhouse near the Old Spring" by Andrew S. Berky {Pennsylvania German Society, Norristown, 1955). I have found articles discussing the move of many Pennsylvania Germans to NC. So I believe that Jacob's father was a descendant of Germans, not English. Jacob's mother was Elisabeth (Semens, according to Mrs. Scott)--it may be a German name also. The mention in Jake's obit that Jacob's mother was Dutch may be a misunderstanding of Deutsch (German) for Dutch; I think my great grandmother made the same mistake. The family story is that she was very proud of her "Dutch" heritage. Mrs. Scott also found the family in PA: in Lehigh Co, Upper Milford Township. A Johan Michael Guthmann (Christopher and Michael's father)and Maria Catherina, Johan Michael's wife, are mentioned in church documents along with a daughter Catherina, and his sons. I have also been in contact with someone who studies old maps who found the village Alsophe in the Palatinate region of Germany. I haven't done any work there yet. I have one more message for you.
