David Draper born 1784 in Fredericksburg Va, is the ancestor of the Draper family who settled in Talucah, Morgan Co, Alabama. David Draper came here to Alabama, along with his brothers Walter Draper, and Richard Draper, and their sister, Susan Draper Grantland. She married William E. Grantland. I. WALTER DRAPER In 1818, Walter Draper and his wife moved to Morgan Co. They settled near Somerville Alabama. Walter J. Draper was born 1792 in Virginia and died Feb 1868. He married Elizabeth Ann Winton. b. 1798 in Virginia and died in 1861 or 1862. They had two children, Martha Draper and Virginia Draper. Martha Draper married Feb 24, 1844. She married John M. Sharp. They had two sons, William Sharp and Dewitt Sharp. Virginia Draper married John Winton and had seven children: 1. Walter Winton 2. John Winton 3. Barbara 4. Solomon 5. Fenila 6. William 7. Martha Ann II. RICHARD DRAPER Richard Draper was born 1821 in Va and died between 1870-1880 in Morgan Co Alabama. He married Sarah Breeding in Feb 1843. She was born 8/19/1824 and died June 8, 1843 in childbirth. Presumably the child died too. He then married Sarah Ann Dillard in Sept 19, 1846. She was born 1827. DAVID DRAPER David Draper was born in Virginia in 1784. His first wife was Mary ? and she was born 1789 in S.C. He then married Mary Quinn, dtr of John Quinn and Elizabeth Morgan. b. 12/25/1785, York District, SC. m. David Draper Jan 5, 1824 in Alabama. They are buried in the Crowder-Draper Cemetery at Talucah, Alabama. He owned a large cotton operation and ginning industry. He owned 880 acres of land and 19 slaves. He operated a limestone rock quarry located near the "devil's den" at the foot of Ballinger mountain. The Draper plantation home was a spacious dwelling, nestled in a large cedar grove, which gave the place a crowning effect. The house was furnished with beautiful furniture, china and silver. The will of David Draper was probated in Morgan Co aL in 9/23/1850. His heirs are listed at Richard Draper, David Q. Draper, William E. Draper, Horace S. Draper, W. Grantland, husband of Susan Draper, Ben L. Chunn, husband of Sarah E. Draper, Joseph Holloway, husband of Mary A. Draper and the widow Mary Draper. The night the "stars fell on Alabama" all of the slaves ran to the plantation house in terror. It fell to David to go out and calm them and tell them what was happening. They had assumed that it was the end of the world and were wild with fright. ( this story handed down through oral history).
