 Includes NotesNotes for Richard Trist:
The will refers to Richard Trist as a Yeoman so we know he is a farmer of substance. His marriage to Grace is his second, his first wife (the mother of 14 children) dying in childbirth in 1799. He and Grace had at least eight more children of whom Mary Ann, Charlotte, Emma and Harriet were beneficiaries of the will. The 1851 census reveals the widowed Richard (then aged 88) living in quiet retirement with daughter Louisa (born after Mary's death) in nearby Totnes.

Richard and Grace's second daughter Charlotte never married and the same census shows her living in Torquay with her niece, carrying on some kind of business connected with horses for she is quaintly described as a "groom"! Richard Trist died in 1855 at Charlotte's home in Torquay at the age of 92.
