B.L. Brown (son of John H. Brown and Mary McPearson) was born June 23, 1839 in Mercer County Illinois, and died date unknown. He married Helen Preston on December 24, 1856 in Aledo, Mercer County, Illinois, daughter of Lewis Preston.

B.L.Brown was born in Mercer County, on June 23, 1839. He was the 9th child in order of birth. He enlisted in Company H. 84th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and participated in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Beech Grove, Manchester Lookout Mountain under General Thomas. He also participated in Chickmauga, Missionary Ridge and all the engagements at Stone River. He was wounded by a gunshot in the left shoulder, and also at Chickamauga by a minnie ball in his leg, but he remained with his company until scurvy set in and forced him to go to the hospital for five months. after the hospitalization he returned home,
In 1880 he came to Adams County, Iowa and purchased the Lorin C. Hughes farm of 247 acres, one of the best in the county for raising of grain and livestock.. He built a fine house of 24 X 34 feet, 2 stories high. He also had one of the best orchards in the county which took all the premiums and sweepstakes and prizes at the county fair of 1889. He devoted all his time to general farming and stock raising. On national questions he was a republican.
He was married on December 24th, 1856 before he was 18 years of age to Miss Helen Preston at Aledo Mercer County, Illinois.
