About Our Family Research

Descendants of Johann and Eva (Funk or Kunk) Leibham

Surname Research: Funk (or Kunk), Jerger, Jung, Klötzel (or (Kloetzel), Kraft, Leibham, Muger, Natery, Scherr, Schlosser , Schumacher, Stauß or Stauss.

In November 1934, Josef Leibham & Emma Scherr were united in marriage in Selz, Rasdelnaja, Odessa, Russia. While living in Selz they had three sons: Franz, Wendelin & Peter. Unfortunately, Wendelin, who was born in 1937, died at the age of five on 24 December 1942 from pneumonia. In 1943, the German Army moved the Leibham family from Russia to Wartheland (Poland), in the business district of Konie, community of Goslowitz, Altlichen, where they lived for nine months. Traveling with them were Emma's sixty-nine year old mother, Elisabeth Scherr, her brother & his wife, Franz & Emilie Scherr, & Josef's sister, Helene Leibham. It is possible that Josef's sister, Angelina Jung & her family were traveling with them also. In September of 1944, Josef Leibham was drafted into the German Army, Waffen-SS division. Shortly after this, Emma & her family traveled by covered wagon, then by bus & finally by freight train to Viersen, Germany. During their travel, the German Red Cross took Emma's mother, Elisabeth Scherr, who had been paralyzed from a stroke, away to a hospital in East Germany. She died in Cottbus, East Germany in 1945. Emma Leibham lived with her two sons in Weenzen, Niedersachsen, Germany until December of 1951. In Germany they worked on a farm caring for two acres of sugar beets. Emma Leibham & her two sons immigrated to the United States in January of 1952, traveling aboard the S.D. Sturgis, which was carrying U.S. troops to New Orleans, Louisiana. In January 1952 they arrived by train in Collyer, Kansas where they lived with Emma's cousin, Bernard and Edith Scherr on their farm for a year.

Joseph Leibham was born in 1909 at Selz, Rasdelnaja, Odessa, Russia to Wendelin and Theresia (née Stauß or Stauss) Leibham. His parents had at least 10 children: Wendelin (died in WWI), Rosina, Bernhardt, George (married Eva Jerger), Kaismir, Rochus (married Katherine Schlosser), Angelina (married Valentine Jung, Jr.), Helene (unmarried), & Joseph. The names the other children are unknown at this time (possibly two sons & on daughter). His paternal grandparents were Johann and Eva (née Funk or Kunk) Leibham.

Emma (née Scherr) Leibham was born 26 October 1908 at Selz, Rasdelnaja, Odessa, Russia to Franz & Elisabeth (née Schumacher) Scherr. She passed away 3 Jan 1996 in Quinter, Gove, Kansas & is buried at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Collyer, Trego, Kansas. Emma's brother, Franz Scherr, Jr., who married Emilie Natery, settled in Portland, Oregon. He & his wife are buried in Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Emma's sister, Franziska Scherr, married a Klötzel (or (Kloetzel; no other information is know about her at this time). Emma's paternal grandparents were Peter & Franziska (née Muger) Scherr. Her maternal grandparents were Andreas & Therese (née Kraft) Schumacher.

Emma Leibham, who never remarried, received notification that her husband, Josef Leibham, was missing as of December 1944 at Tatapina, Hungary, in 1957. She later learned that he had been sent to prison in Siberia. Josef Leibham was released from prison in 1956 & returned to Leninbad, Russia where he remarried, believing his first wife & two sons were dead. The maiden name of his second wife, Rosa, is unknown at this time. We believe he passed away about 1985 in Leninbad, Russia & was buried there. Rosa Leibham eventually immigrated to Germany in 1976 & was buried there.

This is based on EWZ documentation & information provided by family members. There are still many "brick walls" relating the families mentioned above. I am very interested in all twigs and branches of the Leibham family. If you have data or are interested in these lines, please email me. Other spellings that I have seen are Leibhan, Leibhahn, Leichtnam, Lei
