DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CAUSEY, 1744-1828, OF MISSISSIPPI by E. R. Killian, January 13, 2008 EXPANDED HOME PAGE TEXT (Provided because the Home Page space is limited in the actual page presentation. The following includes information not shown on the web site home page.) ____Causeys in Mississippi and Louisiana largely descend from the two families of Revolutionary War Captain William Causey, Senior, born July 17, 1744 at Grant's Causeway, County Galway, Ireland (Family Legend), and died July 03, 1828 at his Causey Springs Plantation built in 1805 near Berwick, Amite Co., Mississippi. ____William Cawsey (sic, Causey) apparently arrived at Charles Town, South Carolina aboard the Brigantine 'St. Peter' from London on February 10, 1768. He evidently continued on to Maryland where he may have inherited land from his grandfather, William.(Legend) ____He was living in Maryland at the start of the Revolutionary War and joined the 14th Maryland Battalion of Militia in 1776, and served under General Francis Marion, the famed 'Swamp Fox', in South Carolina from 1779-1782. He enlisted as a Private, was elected an Ensign and promoted to Captain before the war's end. He was thereafter called 'Captain' in honor of his Patriotic service. After the war he moved his wife and family to near Beaufort, South Carolina and remained there, according to Family Legend, until the children of his first marriage were grown. ____William reportedly married his unknown first wife in Maryland and raised a family of eleven children. His first wife died ca. 1803 in South Carolina and he married secondly to Susannah Jackson on September 2, 1805 in Wilkinson/Amite Co., Mississippi and raised a second family of eight children. ____For his Patriotic Revolutionary War service he was 'granted' 320 acres of land in Amite Co., Mississippi on the west fork of the Amite River between Liberty and Centreville, one-half mile north of Berwick, Amite Co., Mississippi. Given the natural freshwater springs on the property, his plantation became known as 'Causey Springs.'
