Bracadale Parish was on the McLeod estate.Evictions reduced the population from 2103 in 1821 to 1769 in 1831.This drop in population was 'solely to be ascribed to the system of farming which has for some time been adopted, viz., throwing a number of farms into one large tack for sheep grazing and dispossessing and setting adrift the small tenants'-New Statistical Account. The number of tenants 'set adrift' in this way can be gauged from the fact that in 1826 no fewer than 229 people from Bracadale, all of whom had received notices of eviction fro the McaLeod estate management, applied for assisted passages to Canada, their applications being accompanied bt similar requests fro the neighbouring parish of Duirinish where,by 1841, over 3,000 acres had been converted from arable to pasture. The crofters share of the land in Bracadale was eventually so minute as to be almost negligible and the parish was described by a Skye crofter to the Napier Commission as 'practically a desert',it cosisted almost entirely of six sheep farms of which Glenbrittle,Talisker and Drynoch were enormous.
The MacLeod Papers are at Dunvegan Castle.
