List is published in Somerset Cty. Hist. Quarterly- p. 300.
Death record indicates that he was married at time of death.

!MILITARY: 1812- served as colonel for several years in War of 1812.
In his granddaughter, S. Libbie Teeple's letter regarding her
memories of him, she states that he was stationed with his regiment
at Powles or Paulus Hook during 1813-1814.
The Old Records Committee at Basking Ridge Prebyterian Church sent
a packet of materials to me simple titled "The Breese Family".
From this, the following information was extracted. Unfortunately
the author of the information is not named, but seems to have had
the letters written to his wife while he was sationed at Paulus
Hook during the War of 1812. The author could have been S. Libbie Teeple
since she seemed to have had the letters at one time.
"John Brees was colonel of 2nd Regiment of the Seventh Brigade, with
headquarters at Basking Ridge, at the time of General Lafayette's
visit to this country, and previous to that time served as Captain in the
War of 1812. I have in my possession the originals of three letters
written to his wife from Paulua Hook, where he was stationed with his
company in the fall of 1814, also a letter from Mrs. Elizabeth Brees
to her husband. It is noticeable that in all four letters the signature
is spelled "Brees", the final "e" being omitted, which seems to
demonstrate that this was the original spelling of the name. In the
following letter, written in 1824, the name is spelled "Breeze", but
as I have only a typewritten copy of this letter, it is possible
that the original letter gives the old spelling. I once saw the original
but cannot recall whether or not this is so.

!OBITUARY: Taken from an Ottawa, IL newspaper (clipping came to me from Flora
Love, who saved the clipping, along with a note which read as follows:
"Will send you a little slip cut from an Ottawa paper. The lady spoken
of -Miss Susan Breese- was your Father's Aunt and your Great Aunt. Put it
with your precious things and save it all your life. -signed: Aunt Genie)
OBIT. has "died Jan 7, 1905" handwritten across it. Name of newspaper is
not indicated. It appears that she died in or near Basking Ridge, NJ and
is buried in Evergreen Cemetary near there.
"AGED EASTERN LADY DEAD- Father served in Revolution- Has Relatives
Here"
"A clipping from a newspaper in New Jersey contains the following notice
of the death of a lady whose life linked the present day with
revolutionary times:
Miss Susan Breese, 95 years old was buried in Evergreen Cemetary near
here today. She was a real daughter of the American Revolution, for her
father was Colonel Breese, of 1776 fame, an officer in Washington's army,
who commanded one of the New Jersey foot regiments.
Miss Breese died at her home on the Millbrook road from ailments brought
on by old age. The funeral services were attended by many relatives of
the family and friends. Rev. C.B. Condit, of Liberty Corner officiated,
in the adsence of Rev. J.L. Reeve, pastor of the local church, of which
Miss Breese was a member.
Miss Breese had always lived in Basking Ridge and her father had also
lived in this section most of his life. He died at the Basking Ridge
homestead. In 1829 Miss Breese became a member of the local Presbyterian
church and up to the time of her death had always taken an active interest
in its affairs. She for many years made her home with her sister, Mrs. I.
Simpson.
Mrs. T.S. McAtee and Mrs. A H. Whitney, of Ottawa, were nieces of the
deceased."
NOTE- much misinformation is presented in this obit- Susan Brees WAS the
daughter of Colonel John Brees, who fought in the War of 1812, but who
COULD NOT have possibly fought in the Revolutionary War, since he
was born 20 Sept 1778 and would have only been two years old when the
American Revolution started...
OTHER NOTES- The sister referred to- Mrs. I. Simpson- is Maria Mandeville
Breese, who married Isaac Simpson 10 Mar 1864. Maria was a half-sister
to Susan Day Brees- Susan was a child of John's first marriage to Eliz.
Lindsley Raynor and Maria was a child of John's second marriage to the
widow Maria Mandeville Winne.
