Descendants of William Lake

Generation No. 2

2. VINCENT2 LAKE (WILLIAM1) was born January 14, 1769, and died 1815. He married ELIZABETH.

Notes for V
INCENT LAKE:
Vincent bought 400 acres of land on Berkley Run (near what is now Webster, West Virginia) from Isaac Davisson for 150 pounds currency on July 17, 1797 (see Harrison County (WV) Deed Book 3 - Page 30 and Taylor County (WV) Book 1 - Page 292). Two hundred acres of this land were later (1801) sold to his father William (see Harrison County Deed Book 5 - Page 28, and Taylor County Book 14 - Page 265). Vincent appears on Virginia tax records of 1790. He also appears on the Harrison County Tithables List of 1799, Book 1 - Page 140.

After Vincent's death, Elizabeth married James Michael on September 9, 1820. Vincent was one of the original trustees of the town of Williamsport, founded in 1801. The name was changed to Pruntytown (now West Virginia) in 1845. The following was copied from The Grafton Sentinel, Grafton, West Virginia dated Wednesday March 3, 1965:

Lewis's History of West Virginia 5112 (1) Prunty
"Pruntytown, then in Harrison County, was established a town under the name of Williamsport, January 8, 1801, on lands of David Prunty, at a place called the 'Cross Roads', and Robert Plummer, James Cochran, John Adbury, Peter Johnson and Vincent Lake were appointed trustees".

Taylor County was formed from Harrison, Barbour and Marion in 1844 and in 1845, by Act of Assembly, the name of Williamsport was changed to Pruntytown.
