AYWARD JACKSON LAKE:
The following article was written by Karron Lake and mailed to me by Sue Pringle of Bedford, Texas in 1996:

"Hayward was the only child of John William and Effie L. Edwards Lake. He was born on August ?? (unreadable on my copy), 1905 in Braxton, West Virginia near Exchange. He lived there until the age of 6, when the family moved to (unreadable), WV. After a time, the family moved again to Palmer, WV, which was the site of the West Virginia Midland Railroad Terminal and the Hollywood Lumber Company (which has since burned down). It was here that Hayward developed his love for the railroad. After about a year, the family moved again, this time to Buckhannon.

Hayward was about 8 years old at this time. He could already read and write. This was due to his older cousins teaching him when they came home from school. After 18 months, the family moved back to Braxton. There, he finished grade school and then went to Sutton High School. It took him longer than most children to finish high school because the first year he had the flu and the next year, Typhoid Fever.

At 18, he left to live on his own and earn his own way in the world. He worked at odd jobs for the railroad in Burnsville for the next two years. He then joined the army and was stationed in Baltimore. He was in the company band and worked in headquarters at the switchboard and in personnel records. He spent 7 weeks in Laredo, Texas on border patrol. Shortly after that he was discharged and returned to Braxton.

In 1929, Hayward went to a revival in Riffle and there met his future wife, Leo May Dennison. He and Leo were married on December 8, 1929 in a double ceremony with her sister Mildred and Walter Wiggin. The Wiggins left for Plains, Kansas and in April, Hayward and Leo went too. There Leo lost their first child when she became severely burned due to an explosion from her gas oven when she was eight months pregnant. After she recovered somewhat, she and Hayward returned home to Braxton, West Virginia. But there was no work, so they returned to Kansas.

There their first daughter, Kathleen, was born and in 1933 the family returned to Exchange, West Virginia. In subsequent years, Doraleen, Donn, and John William were born. The family lived in various towns around the state due to the Depression and good jobs were hard to find. In 1948, Hayward decided to go to Borger, Texas and try his luck there. There his family prospered but Leo suffered from homesickness and during the next several years the family moved back and forth from West Virginia to Texas, until they finally settled in Deer Park, Texas. By then the children were grown and married with families of their own. Hayward moved back to West Virginia to take care of his father who was a widower by then and was suffering from the after effects of a stroke. They lived on a farm in Flatwoods until John Lake's death in 1972. Hayward worked as a police dispatcher and constable for the town of Sutton until he retired in 1975. He and Leo then returned to Deer Park, Texas to be near their children and grandchildren. But the pull of West Virginia was too strong for them and in 1978, they returned to live in Ireland, West Virginia. But in 1983 they were forced to return to Texas to live due to poor health. They returned one last time in 1985 but were unable to stay due to a car accident that left Hayward paralyzed for the rest of his life and he and Leo returned to Texas for the last time. Both he and Leo are buried in Long Cemetery near Paris, Texas. Hayward passed away on July 28, 1985 and Leo on July 31, 1987." Written and submitted by Karron S. Lake.
