Notes for B
ESSIE MAY LAKE:
Clyde is a farmer. He and Bessie made their home on Bunner's Ridge, near Fairmont, West Virginia. Bessie Lake Carpenter was the main inspiration for this collection of Lake family history and was a great source of information. My father (Lester Lake) and I visited with Aunt Bessie and Uncle Clyde on Christmas day, 1969. As always, she got out all her old family pictures and notes and asked if I had this one or that one in my writeup for the family and I would check to see if I did. She was always dropping little notes in the mail when she would remember some family story or date that she thought would be important to my work. It was with great sadness and shock that I received the word at work on December 26 that this great person, my Aunt Bessie, had died. She was like another mother to me, and after nearly 30 years (1994), I still miss her very much (L. Rex Lake). The following is from The Fairmont Times, December 27, 1969:

Mrs. Bessie May Carpenter, 75, of Route 6, Bunner's Ridge, died Friday morning in her home. Born on Bunner's Ridge on April 15 (17?), 1894, she was the daughter of Ila and Evolina Travis Lake.

Survivors include her husband, Clyde Carpenter; five sons, Willis and Herman, both at home; Wayman of Winfield and Leslie and Glen of Bunner's Ridge; five daughters, Mrs. Phillip (Vivian) Combs of Mudlick; Mrs. Bernard (June) Robe of Bunner's Ridge; Mrs. James (Audra) Heston of Catawba; Mrs. Arnold (Lucille) Brady of Acokeek, Maryland; Mrs. Walter (Doris) Carpenter of Hopewell; five brothers: Emmet Lake of Fairmont; Wayne Lake of Fairview; Claude Lake of East Grafton Road; Lester Lake of Piney Run; Burl Lake of Millersville; two sisters: Mrs. Irene Morgan of Pricketts Creek and Mrs. Jetty Grubb of Piney Run; 23 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Four sisters and a brother are deceased.

She was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church on Bunner's Ridge. Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Rex Lake, Jack Lake, Leo Morgan, Frank Morgan, Bill Bingamon, Jack Woodward, Ray Rogers and William Rogers.
