Notes for C
ARL LEONARD LAKE:
The following article was prepared by Carl Lake Jr. about his dad and his family:

Carl L. Lake Sr.
1921 - 1959

"Carl was discharged from the marines in December 1945 at Bainbridge, Maryland. He reportedly did not ever return to Fairmont, West Virginia, his boyhood home. Instead, for reasons not known to me, he took up residence in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In 1947, he relocated to Cleveland, Ohio and again no reason is known for this move. He would have several residences in the city before he moved in at 6102 Detroit Avenue, a boarding house on Cleveland's west side. It was here that he would meet Elizabeth (Betty) Schmidt, a 22 year old war widow. She worked as a cleaning lady, keeping halls waxed and cleaned. One day, she was scrubbing the hall outside Carl's room when he opened the door and proceeded to instruct her on the proper way (the marine way) to clean a floor. He was dressed in baggy pants a t-shirt and sporting a large pipe hanging off his lips. Betty would recall later, 'he looked so stupid with that pipe in his mouth that he was actually cute.' Apparently, a relationship ensued and the two were married on September 27, 1947 by the Justice of the Peace in Newburgh Heights, Ohio.

They moved from the boarding house into a small apartment on Cleveland's east side. During this time, Carl began suffering from ulcers that he had been treated for in California during the war. He petitioned the Veteran's Administration to assist him and was awarded a small disability and medical treatment.

On June 23, 1948, the couples first child was born: John Carl Lake, named for Betty's father and Carl. They moved to a slightly larger apartment at 7207 Lexington Avenue. It was here their second child, Lora June Lake, was born. After her birth, they moved into Cedar Estates, a public housing project on East 22nd and Cedar Avenue. Carl also entered a tv/radio repair course at East High School and was living off a Veterans Administration grant while in school. While it is not known whether or not he completed the course, it is known that he never entered the profession. His occupations would include, over the years, metal worker, clothes presser, metal fabricator as well as others. Even though he rarely, if ever, missed a day of work, he never made enough to support his family. It is my opinion that by now, six years after leaving the marines, a deep depression had set in due to his lack of hope for a future.

On June 17, 1951, Michael Russell Lake was born. On November 17, 1952, Betty gave birth again. Terrance was born at home. He was born blue and was feared dead. He did revive, however.

During the winter of 1952/1953, a snowstorm struck, leaving in it's wake snow drifts that reached the second floor of the project balconies. It is said that Carl would hang drop his children from the balcony into the snow, much to their delight. However, the storm also trapped the buildings occupants. Carl and some of the other men would man shovels and dig tunnels to each entrance. Afterward, the men would track their way to the grocery store to bring back supplies to the project families.

On November 14, 1954, a fifth child was born: Richard Allen Lake. This year, a new project opened across Cedar Avenue from St. Vincent's Hospital at East 30th Street. The Lakes moved to a brand new apartment at 2346 East 30th Street. It was around this time that Carl's alcoholism peaked. He would be known to leave for work on Friday morning and not come home until Sunday night. His ulcers would flare up because of the alcohol consumption. It is told that around this time also that the couple would contemplate divorce. For whatever reason: the kids, money, whatever, the divorce would never come about.

Carl had not been what Betty's relatives would consider a perfect husband. But still, the brothers, sister and parents would visit the Lakes on Easter and at Christmas. On one of the rare occasions that Betty's mother would visit off holiday, Carl had just finished cleaning and the floors had been stripped and rewaxed by him. Apparently, the children had gotten into the saltine crackers and a few crumbs had gone unnoticed on the floor. When Pauline arrived, she immediately noticed the crumbs, retrieved a broom and dustpan and cleaned up the mess. In doing so, she uttered something that besmirched the cleanliness of the Lake house and likened it to a pig sty. Having been cleaning all day, apparently Carl did not feel the remark was justified and basically instructed her as to the location of the front door, advised her not to let it injure her rear end on the way out and invited her to never return. Until her death in 1992, Pauline never reentered the Lake house, as was also the case with Betty's brothers and her father. Marge, Betty's sister, would be known to visit her sister for a few minutes every three years. In all fairness, it must be noted that Carl's relatives would never visit either in the twelve years they were married.

By 1957, Carl's ulcers would worsen to become bleeding duodenal ulcers and require surgery. On May 2, 1957 Carl was admitted to Crile Veterans Administration Hospital in Parma, Ohio. They surgically removed the ulcers. He was progressing along well when on May 27, he began experiencing chest pain. An electrocardiogram was performed and it was diagnosed as a heart attack. Carl would spend the next three months recuperating at home, returning to work sometime in August.

On June 30, 1958, the couples last child was born: Carl Leonard Lake Jr. This baby would not only inherit Carl's name, but also his ulcers. On June 1, 1959, Carl came home from work at 3::30 p.m. He got himself a cup of coffee and sat at the kitchen table where he picked up Carl Jr. from the floor. He lit a cigarette. At 3:40 p.m., Carl dropped the cigarette to the table, dropped Carl Jr. (ll months old) to the floor, said 'Betty' and collapsed to the floor, dying instantly of a massive heart attack. On June 4, 1959, Carl's relatives would see him one last time, the first since 1941, at his funeral. Carl was given a military funeral and interred at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Other than a card at Christmas and an annual ten minute telephone call, Betty would never hear from Carl's relatives. Emmet, Carl's father, would be the only contact two times a year, with the West Virginia Lakes. When Emmet died in 1974, we received one last telephone call from Dorothy Bunner informing us of his death.

John Lake joined the marines in 1966. He joined the Cleveland Police Department in 1974 and retired in 1996. Lora Lake married Bill Litos. They and her three children live on Cleveland's west side. Michael Lake was married twice and lives with his family in Lorain, Ohio. He is a welding foreman. Terrance Lake never married, was working in the laundry of Fairview General Hospital when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died April 20, 1992 at the age of 39. Richard Lake has been married twice and is a machine shop foreman at an Avon Lake, Ohio plant. He lives with his wife on Cleveland's west side. Carl Jr. married only once. He works as a medical/nursing assistant treating terminal cancer patients since 1991. He is awaiting nursing school and lives with him family in Parma, Ohio. Elizabeth (Betty) Lake never remarried. After a heart attack in 1967, an arm amputation in 1969 and being diagnosed with lung cancer in 1983, she died on January 20, 1984.

This history was written by Carl Leonard Lake Jr., but from a third persons point of view to be fair."
