240. LAWRENCE REX7 LAKE (LESTER LEONARD6, ILA HENDERSON5, JOHN AARON4, ILA3, GEORGE B.2, WILLIAM1) was born April 21, 1935 in Fairmont, WV. He married JANICE LOUISE SNYDER December 11, 1954 in Fairmont, WV - Morgantown Ave. Free Methodist Church, daughter of CHARLES SNYDER and CASSIE VANGILDER. She was born May 09, 1929 in Fairmont, WV.

Notes for L
AWRENCE REX LAKE:
Since I (Rex) am the author of this book, this is my page to shine, so here goes.

Janice and I were married December 11, 1954 at the Free Methodist Church on Morgantown Avenue in Fairmont, West Virginia by Rev. John Lee. This was a double wedding ceremony with my brother Gary marrying Dolly Ellen Mae Williamson. I was just beginning a four year obligation with the U.S. Navy at the time of our marriage. We were stationed in Norman, Oklahoma (January - March 1955), Jacksonville, Florida (April 1955 - October 1956) and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (October 1956 - August 1958). Upon leaving the navy, we settled on Bunner Ridge, near Fairmont, West Virginia where we still reside (1994).

Janice is retired from the Marion County Board of Education as a school principal with nearly 30 years service. She is a graduate of Fairmont State College with a degree in education, and received her masters degree from West Virginia University at Morgantown. She completed several hours on her doctorate before retiring. She enjoys traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is the daughter of Charles Kent and Cassie Vangilder Snyder.

After leaving the navy in 1958, I started school that fall in September at Fairmont State College. When I finally graduated in June 1964, there was some talk of giving me a retirement ceremony because it had taken me so long to get my bachelors degree. But the time needed to support my family of four children sometimes took me away from my studies. Besides, I had a hard head and it sometimes took longer for me to absorb all that knowledge. I worked at Alcan Aluminum until I graduated, then began my career at Monongahela Power Company on July 1, 1964. I am currently (1994) Supervisor, Plant Accounting and reluctant to consider retirement at this time. Besides, I'm too young.
I joined the Naval Air Reserve in November 1959, and advanced to the rank of Aviation Machinists Mate Senior Chief before retiring in 1994, not by choice, but by the edict of President Bill Clinton who mandated that the old guys must go. I served for 23 years as a P3 Orion flight engineer and flight engineer instructor and loved every one of my nearly 7,000 flight hours. During my career, I visited such romantic sounding places as Hawaii, Cuba, Bermuda, Panama, Haiti, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Sicily, England, Norway, Canary Islands, Portugal, Azores Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Canada, Ascension Island, Chile, North Pole (where I reenlisted for three years on April 1, 1993 while circling the pole at 500 feet), and I suppose nearly every state in the United States. As a P3 crewmember, I spent lots of weekends in Jacksonville, Florida; Brunswick, Maine; Moffett NAS, California; NAS San Diego, California; NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; NAS Patuxent River, Maryland; NAF Washington, DC (Andrews Air Force Base - the Navy side); NAS Whidby Island, Washington; NAS Key West, Florida; NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii (my favorite) and a thousand passenger stops all over the country. My navy career is one of the proudest accomplishments of my life, ranking just after the pride I have in my four children.

As the author of this book, I reserve the right to return at any time and brag about some new accomplishment I may achieve or to insert some grand experience that occurred in my life that I may have left out in this first pass. As an elder statesman (59 years old), it is my duty to paint as colorful a picture of this, my life, as I can. If I leave that job to someone else, it may not be as superbly written as I, the person who has lived it, will surely do.
