Gene met and married Tomi while stationed in Japan with the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from East Fairmont High School at Fairmont, West Virginia before entering the air force. He made that his career, retiring in 1975. He is employed by the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. They adopted Linda Jean.
