247. JAMES ELDON⁷ LAKE (BERNARD BERYL⁶, ILA HENDERSON⁵, JOHN AARON⁴, ILA³, GEORGE B.², WILLIAM¹) was born February 26, 1945 in Marion County, Fairmont, WV. He married (1) ELLEN ALICIA ALKIRE March 11, 1967. She was born January 11, 1940. He married (2) ROBIN L. ALLTOP 1986.

Notes for JAMES ELDON LAKE:

Jim and Ellen were married March 11, 1967. They purchased her family's home place at French Creek, West Virginia. They lived in the family farmhouse while they built a new home on the property. Jim was a coal miner at the time. He and Ellen later divorced.

Jim and Robin were married in 1986.

Jim was a decorated hero in Viet Nam and was awarded one of the nations highest awards, the Silver Star. The Times-West Virginian published the following account in 1966:

Army Spec. 4 James E. Lake was presented the Silver Star on July 30 (1966) for valor displayed while engaged with a large enemy force on May 18, as a member of the 173rd Airborne Infantry in Viet Nam. Reports say the 21 year old paratrooper deliberately drew fire toward himself by running across hostile terrain so several wounded men could be evacuated safely during the attack on a large Viet Cong force. Lake enlisted in the Army on February 3, 1964. He also was assigned to Panama for 16 months before going to Viet Nam.

Death notice in The Fairmont Times on May 5, 1987 verifies much of the above information:

Ellen Marie Anderson, 49, of Route 2, Bingamon Road, Mannington (WV), died Monday morning May 4, 1987 at her residence. She was born July 4, 1937 at Coal Lick, Harrison County (WV), a daughter of Walter Ernest and Lillian Lake Gripper of Elyria, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Franklin Delano Anderson, a son and daughter in law, William Ernest (Butch) and Pamela Sue Anderson, at home; three daughters: Mrs. Rodney K. (Frankie E.) Mauller of Route 2, Mannington; Mrs. Randall (Neva K.) Nedley of Fairmont and Mrs. Douglas E. (Deanna F.) Miller of Gaithersburg, Maryland; seven grandchildren, including William C. Anderson, whom the Andersons were raising; a stepmother in law, Glenda Davis of Toccoa, Georgia and one sister, Barbara Gripper of Elyria.

She was preceded in death by a sister, June Gripper, and a grandson, Joseph L. Mauller. She was formerly employed at the St. Barbara's Nursing Home and was a member of the Stringtown United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends at the Masters Funeral Home, Mannington, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James C. Ullian officiating. Burial will be in the Wadestown Cemetery.
