Notes for J
OHN GROSVENORIII:
John was in Perry Co. and Randolph Co. (Jackson Co., was formed from Randolph Co., in 1816).                                          John Grosvenor & Medusa, his wife 19 Nov. 1807 conveyed by deceased Robert Morrison & Isabella, his wife to John Grosvenor 5 June 1802. Filed in Register of U. S. Land Office Kaskaskia 22 Dec. 1804 Bk. A page 127-128.
From State Archives file: John Grosvenor, Randolph Co., member of jury to appraise real estate of late David Hicks July 15, 1799 (Perrin Collection, page 48 #47).
John Grosvenor commissioned J. P. Sept. 4, 1843 (Exec. Record 1843-1847 Vol. 4, p115).
Randolph Co. Records: page 97. John Grosvenor of the Village of Kaskaskia & Jacob Fisher of the County of Hardy of the State of Virginia record $2100 promissory notes, to be paid in 3 installments, $700 to be paid 1 Jan. 1809, $700 to be paid 1 Jan. 1810, $700 to be paid 1 Jan. 1811, for a dwelling house in Kaskaskia formerly occupied by Geo. Fisher and known as Fisher's Tavern.
p 725 George Fisher & Catherine his wife to John Grosvenor 10 June 1808 for $3000 to them in hand paid by John Grosvenor of the town of Kaskaskia.                                                      Pioneer History of Illinois, by John Reynolds, 1887.
John Grosvenor Resided in this town (Washington, on the west bank of the Kaskaskia River, not far South from the Northern limits of the present county of Randolph) in 1799 and for some years. He was a native of Connecticut and a stone mason and a farmer. He cultivated a large farm adjacent to the town and sold much produce. He was an honest correct man moral in all things except perhaps in his young days, when he permitted the Goddess of love to furnish him with a traveling companion from Connecticut to Illinois, at whose departure some one at least in Conn. felt sorry, As the country in Horse Prairie improved the town declined until the village ceased to exist and the country flourished.                                                            John and his brother Parker signed the petion to separate Illinois from Indiana.

Notes for I
SRAEL GROSVENOR:
3/29/1842 issue of People's Monitor and Warren Democrat, Warren, Pa. Full column obit: (refers to previous issue not obtainable at Warren Lib.) "We mentioned in our last the death of Israel Grosvenor under peculiar circumstances. Israel Grosvenor has resided in this county about 20 years... man of fine personal appearance of abilities superior to most men, which he unfortunately perverted... be lived to have gotten property of other people... close association with persons of the worst character... father of a large family. Too many of them followed his own ways. His son John Grosvenor assisted in stealing from one of our citizens a large amount of money, over $1,000 of bank notes. One of the notes had a very small piece torn from the corner of it which the owner kept - John Grosvenor passed off that very note. He was tried and convicted, although his mother and others of the family swore falsely in order to screen him. John Grosvenor is now in the penitentiary. Israel Grosvenor for receiving the stolen money and his wife for perjury, as mentioned in our last, were sentenced to the same place. Israel Grosvenor had lived beyond the years commonly appointed to man. He was considered eminently successful in the way of life chosen by him. Yet --mark his end-one of his sons became a notorious vagabond and died, it is uncertain where...his son Nathan blind and on his death bed in prison (err) beside him.-- It was a pitiable sight to view this old man tottering on the brink of the grave and his aged wife brought into court to receive their sentence. Israel Grosvenor had no sentiment of religion and no sense of the obligations of mortality...wasted the talents given him and died without hope. It is feared that his numerous descendants taught by his precepts and influenced by his example are to follow in his path... left no legacy but a name dishonored and disgraced. May we hope...that the children, his descendants, who minds are not yet formed to vice, may be kept from that contamination of crime, and grow up to be useful and valuable members of society. Per Warren Co. Historical Society file: Israel Grosvenor went from Conn. to Vermont to Sandy Hill, New York--to Phila. and from thence to Warren Co., Penn.. He was a cattle buyer by trade, judging by a letter from him to Richard Bishop Miller in the late 1820s. (Letter on file but not unpacked since the society moved to new building). Notes say more info available...not flattering. Another ref. Israel Grosvenor (father or son ?) indicted May Court 1824 for stabbing Hezekiah Tinkam. Census 1830, Sugar grove Twp., Warren Co., Pa. p.31:m: 1(10-14), 1(50-59); f: 19(5-7), 1(15-19), 1(50-59). Poss.the girl 5-9 is Caroline. Census 1840, Freehold, m:2(60-69);f:1(60-69),1(15-19)...pos. Caroline. Source for some of chart on Israel Grosvenor is History of Woodstock - Genealogies of Woodstock Families VI, c.1935, beg. p. 261 Deeds on file in Warren Co. Pa: rd-77, Administrator's bond; est. of Israel Grosvenor, decd., to the Common-wealth; Lester Wright, administrator; 18 March 1843.
