Samuel was a Capt. In the Civil War. He was Sheriff and Postmaster at Marietta, Washington, Ohio. Descendants of John Lee of Farmington, p112.
Enlisted as a private in Co. B., 36th Ohio Vols. Infantry, Aug. 20, 1861. Was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, Dec. 1864; was sent on detached service and was at Hart Island, New York Harbor. Sanuel was a Lieutenant in Co., B 36th Ohio Regiment in the Civil War. He was in the battles of Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Lexington, and Lynchburg. He led his Co. as Captain at Chickamauga and was mustered out in 1865. (Bowen).

Col., 6/9/1863, Col. 4/19/1865. Brevetted Brigadier General 1865. USV (War Service). Commanded post of Chattanooga; 3rd Brig., Prov. Div.; Dist. ETOWAH; 2nd Brig., Dist. ETOWA. Called "Old Figgers" for his skill in predicting election results. He was a Republican and served as State Speaker of the House and U.S. Congressman. He also was a Chautauqua speaker, a brilliant debater, and a spellbinding conversationalist. In1901 he wrote "William McKinley, His Life and Work". In 1902 wrote " The Book of the Presidents" with biographical sketches. Chairman, National Military Park (at Chickamauga and Chattanooga). Retired from the Army as a General.            Solicitor of Athens in 1867-1868.                              Presidential elector, 1872 and 1880.                              Representative State Legislature, 1873 and 1875.

Charles Grosvenor was admitted to the bar by the District Court at Athens in 1857. In 1858 he formed a law partnership with Hon. S. S. Knowles. Enlisted in the Eighteenth Ohio Infantry, and soon promoted to Major of his Regiment. June 1863, promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel, and in April 1865, to Colonel, with the brevet title of Brigadier-General, having commanded a brigade at the battle of Nashville, and having been recommended by General Steedman, on account of gallant action on the field. The recommendation was endorsed by General George II. Thomas. He was elected in 1873, and re-elected in 1875 to the House of Representatives, from Athens County as Speaker of the House. Mr Grosvenor was a member of the law firms of Grosvenor & Jones of Athens and Grosvenor & Vorhees of Pomeroy. Major 18 Ohio infantry Sept. 25, 1861; Lieutenant Colonel June 9, 1863; Colonel April 19, 1865; brevet Colonel and Brigadier-General volunteers March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the war; honorable mustered out Oct. 9, 1865. Daniel served three years in the 3d Ohio Volunteers, was wounded at the Battle of Perrysville, and afterwards taken prisoner. He was wounded at Perryvile, Ky. and taken prisoner. He rejoined the army, was captured on a raid in Georgia and was imprisoned at Richmond. He was exchanged, and rejoined his regiment.(Bowen).

AMUEL CLEMENT FESSENDEN, REV.:
Samuel pursued classical studies and was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1834 and from Bangor (Maine) Theological Seminary in 1837. He was ordained pastor of the Second Congregational Church of Rockland, Maine in 1838, where he remained until failing health compelled his resignation in 1856. He then established the "Maine Evangelist," for the advocacy of anti-slavery views. He studied law and in 1858 was admitted to the bar of Lincoln Co., Maine, engaging in practice at Rockland, where he was elected judge of the municipal court. In 1860 he was elected to the 37th Congress on the Republican ticket, representing the eastern district of Maine. In 1865 he removed his residence to Stamford, Conn. and was soon appointed to the Board of Patent Examiners of the U.S. Patent Office by President Andrew Johnson. He resigned from this position in 1870 to resume his early work in the ministry, supplying vacant pulpits in Conn., New York and Maine. He was United States Consul at St. John, New Brunswick, 1879-1881.
