Notes for GRACE GROSVENOR:
7/14/1933: At East St. Louis on Monday night, Anton Lutz age 60 yr., and an old Austrian became enraged and shot three of his neighbors to death. The victims were 2 men and a woman. Those killed were Swope Tallent and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Welch. The latter two were buried Thursday at Glenn Cemetery, a country burial ground lying in Kinkaid twp. S. E. from Ava, Illinois. The killer lived alone in the 2900 block of Bradley Ave. in East St. Louis and the victims resided on the opposite side of the street of the same block and is said Lutz was in the habit of going about his home unclothed and thus offended some of the neighborhood women. While Lutz was in his yard Monday night, Mr. Tallen went to him to get him to quit his nudist practices. Words became Angry and then blows followed. Lutz went into his house saying he would get a gun and come out and shoot some of his neighbors. Not much was thought of his words as he had previously made similar threats and had done nothing. Mr. Tallent went home and there he and his wife and their next door neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Claud Welch, had gathered at the fence line and were talking about the fight, when Lutz came out of his house carrying a gun. He walked across the street where the party had gathered and deliberately shot Mr. Tallent. He then shot at Mrs Tallent, but she fled and escaped injury. He then turned his gun on the Welch couple, shooting Mr. Welch in the back. Mrs. Welch stooped over her prostrate husband and was also shot. The killer then spied Mrs. Tallent again and snapped at her the empty pistol. He then strode home strutting as though proud of his acts. Lutz was captured a few moments later and Tuesday the coroner's jury held him to the grand jury on three charges of murder. Mrs. Welch's maiden name was Grace Grosvenor and she lived with her mother, Mrs. Sarah Grosvenor in Mississippi Bottom section of S. W. Jackson Co., Illinois. Her mother, Mrs. Sarah Easton lives in Kinkaide Twp. not far from the Glenn Cemetery. Children: Mrs John Phillips, her step daughter, Harold, Vernon, & Billie Welch the couples three sons. Mrs. Welch is survived by one sister. Mr. Welch is survived by his mother Mrs. Martha Welch, 3 sisters and one brother. Mr. Tallent is survived by his wife and one daughter names Helen Maxine Tallent. His mother is Mrs. Ruth Tallent. Also 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Mr. Tallent is to be buried at Tallent, Mo. Burial of the Welch couple is at Glenn Cemetery, Ava, Illinois. Mr. Welch was a pipe fitter and age 44. Wife was about 38. Mr. Tallent was age 29.
