Descendants of John Landers

Generation No. 3

5. DAVID3 LANDERS (JOHN2, JOHN1) died about 1812 in Granville County, NC14. He married ELIZABETH HARRIS 17 Dec 180615.

Notes for D
AVID LANDERS:
Carroll Hayden lists the marriage as 12 Dec 1806.

Notes for E
LIZABETH HARRIS:
Received a Bill of Sale from Amos Gooch 7 May 1812, probably selling David's estate.

Children of D
AVID LANDERS and ELIZABETH HARRIS are:
 i. GINCEY4 LANDERS16, b. Bef. 1812.
 Notes for GINCEY LANDERS:
In another transcription of John Landers, Jr.'s will, the spelling is "Jinsey".

 ii. ELVEY LANDERS16, b. Bef. 1812; m. MOSES WHEELER17, 31 Mar 183117.

6. WILLIAM3 LANDISS (JOHN2 LANDERS, JR., JOHN1) was born about 1769 in Granville County, NC18, and died Aft. 1850 in Crawford County, IN18. He married MARY HENDERSON about 1786 in North Carolina19. She was born Bet. 1770 - 1780 in North Carolina20, and died Bef. 1850 in Crawford County, NC20.

Notes for W
ILLIAM LANDISS:
In 1811 moved from Granville County NC to the Bedford County TN, Landiss settlements (established by Abram Landis on 11 Dec 1794) on the Duck River.

In March 1816 crossed the Ohio River into Crawford County IN with his son John and a daughter. The rest of the family followed in August, 1818. John Kincaid, whose name will be found elsewhere in this genealogy, lived nearby on the Little Blue Creek. Robert Field, Obadiah Vaughn and Caleb Longest also had farms nearby.

This is the William Landes (born 1769) named in the 1850 Crawford County, IN census, living with his son John. He was also named "Landers" in an 1828 deed.

http://www.landiss.com/family/chap01.htm has more information about William.

From Roger Rice Landers:

There is a biography of John Landiss, son of William, son of John Landers and Mary Paris that was published in 1894. Included in a later edition were some notes by Rev. William Landiss dated 1929. Wm. Landiss said that the family settled on the "wrong land". I have always wondered where this might have been. As I was searching for something on the "other" Landers /Landis (Absalom Lowe Landis) in Bedford County, I found the following information. According to Timothy R. Marsh (a Bedford County TN researcher) William and Isaac Landers were living in the area of the land grant that was issued to the family of Christopher Landers (s/o Henry Landers and Catherine Goodnight). This grant was in the Thompson Creek area in south Bedford County, TN. Marsh found no relationship of Christopher Landers and William or Isaac. So this must be the place they were by mistake. Isaac is the son of William. I also found a reference for William Landers as a tax payer in Bedford County for 1812. According to the biography William left Bedford after March 1816. I also have a reference for Isaac Landers as a Pvt. in Col. Newton Cannon's Company in the War of 1812 (Tennesseans in the War of 1812 by Sistler).

Roger also has the deed [Bk. 6 pp. 530-531] of William Landiss selling his 1/5 part of the estate of John Landiss, 17 Jan 1828. William (Landers in that document) sold the land to William V. Taylor of Granville County, NC. This was land inherited from his father's estate. The land sold for $1.00 plus 20.00 later.

This suggests the following: Recall that Mary Paris Landers inherited the right to live on the land of her husband [John] as long as she lived or did not remarry. In order for any of the children to sell the land, Mary had to give up her rights to the land. This she did for $1. William then sold his 1/5 share and the other children's land sales were legitimized.

Notes for M
ARY HENDERSON:
From William Landiss in 1935:

The story is that Mary Henderson and her sister and brother were left in charge of neighbors while the parents went back to England, on a errand supposed to relate to the family estate. During the absence of the parents Indians attacked the settlement, and the children were taken prisoners. Because the sister had blue eyes and light hair, and thus could not be disguised as an Indian, she was killed, but Mary and her brother Robert, who had black hair and eyes, were saved. Mary was supposed to have been nine or ten years old at the time of capture. How long she remained with the Indians is not known definitely, long enough for her to forget almost her own name. One statement is that she did forget it and took the name of Henderson. One story is she with other prisoners were released under treaty with the Indians after the Revolutionary War. The other story is she was rescued by a party of whom William Landis was a member, that he fell in love with her, and married her. Her brother Robert, was said to have been taken back to England, inherited the family estate, and was a member of Parliament. I remember hearing one of my parents, in speaking of this story, say that Robert came from England one time to visit his sister. How much of truth and how much of fiction there is in these stories I do not know. Certain is the name Henderson was carried down in the family, perhaps in the hope of some day inheriting an English fortune.

EORGE T. LANDERS:
Birth year sometimes given as 1781.

His marriage bond is signed by George Landis and Robert Obrien, and spells Nancy's name "O'Briant".

Appears in the Tar River District (NC) 1802-1822 tax records; spelled Landers, Landess, Landish, Landis.

From Carroll Hayden:

George T. Landis left Granville County, North Carolina in the year 1826, settling in Bedford County, Tennessee at what is now Unionville. He himself, with two of his sons (Roland and Alexander) went on to Arkansas where he died in 1856. Many of his descendants however, still live in Middle Tennessee. In about 1853 he and his two sons came to Arkansas.

George T. Landis was the great grandfather of Major Wm. Landis of Oxford, NC.

GRANVILLE COUNTY KINFOLKS, Deed Book T, p. 320: George Landis deed to Allen Howard for land given to said George Landis by Dennis O'Briant, Jan. 6, 1808.

Paid taxes on 67.5 acres of land on the Tar River Dist in NC. Taxed on 67 acres and one slave in 1806 and 2 slaves by 1821.

George T. sold to Richard C. Ogilvie 3 slaves (Mary the mother and her two children Emmaline and Nancy). All three later died (before Feb. 1852) and Ogilvie sued George T., and Roland, who he claimed knew all three were "not sound". Roland was still in Bedford County at that time and was the agent for his father and collecting for debts owed to George T. Do not know the results of the complaint.

This information is from Mr. Francis B. Hays -- Hayes Collection from Oxford Library in NC and William Landis, Orange City, FL 1936, and Roger Landers 1998 in Florida.
