17. WILLIAM4 LANDISS (WILLIAM3, JOHN2 LANDERS, JR., JOHN1) was born 1804 in Granville County, NC77, and died Aft. 13 Sep 1850 in Temple, IN77. He married ELIZABETH KINCAID 6 Apr 1827 in Crawford County, IN78, daughter of JOSEPH KINCAID and ELIZABETH DOWNING. She was born 1808 in Barren County, Kentucky79, and died Aft. 187080.

Notes for WILLIAM LANDISS:
Listed in Indiana marriage records as William Landers.

Many of the children of this family are said to be buried around Birdseye, Indiana.

May 1852 Probate Court Records of William Landiss: Apparently John Landiss, brother of William, is the administrator of the estate and is also the Deputy Sheriff. He decided that the 40 acres owned by William should be sold to pay the debts of William. Elizabeth, wife of William, thought the land to be worth between $250 and $300. She was entitled to a widow's part of the property settlement, but John thought her share should be used to satisfy the family debt. All their children were under 21 so had to have a guardian (Samuel Pepper). He agreed to the sale. The land is appraised at $200. It sold to James G. Sloan for $259. The court approved the sale and finalized the will/probate.

Notes for ELIZABETH KINCAID:
Elizabeth may have born later than stated, as her marriage register noted the consent of her father was obtained.

Margaret E. Smith states that in the 1870 Indiana census Elizabeth was living with her daughter Sarah (Landiss) Hooten in Sterling Township, Crawford County, IN.

The Indiana census of 1850 records "Jane I. Landers" in this household, two years old. She does not appear in the Probate court records of 1851, so could have died by then. However, this does not explain her reported marriage to H. Bradley, unless she is actually the daughter named "Amanda" in the court records.
