Notes for S
ARAH ANN LANDERS:
From Carroll Hayden:

On the 1860 Census Sarah A. LUCKETT is living with Roland and Martha Landers. Sarah was 22 and a son Harvey H. was age 1.

In the 1870 Census for Rocky Bayou, Izard County, Sarah is age 33 living with Roland and Martha. There are two boys listed with this family. HARVEY age 10 and Theodore age 1. Everyone on the census is listed as a Landers.

There have been reports that her second husband, George Washington Gray went berserk and killed his daughter, his wife, and himself. As you will see (see story with Martha M. Gray listing) "Sally" was not killed in this incident. "Sally" and George lived in Theo, and Granger, Texas and it is known that George Washington Gray along with J.M. Cann erected a furniture store in Troy, Texas in 1877. Troy, located just a few miles west of Theo and both are in Bell County, Texas.

Martha died 2 Aug 1902, Granger, Texas, buried: Theo, Bell County, Texas. Some have reported that her name was Sarah Martha. Her headstone gives her name as Martha M. wife of E. Johnson. She is buried along with her father, on the NE corner of the Theo Loop in Bell County, Texas. In 1995 the area was overgrown and if you did not know the cemetery was there you would not be able to find anything. This is the daughter that G. W. Gray killed for mysterious reasons before he killed himself.

Notes for H
ARVEY BAXTER LANDERS:
From Carroll Hayden:

Harvey Baxter Landers, better known as Baxter, was a Captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The uniform he wore is housed in the Jacksonport Museum in Jacksonport, (near Newport) Arkansas. Baxter was the last person to be buried in the old original Jeffery Burial Grounds established by James Jeffery of Virginia and his son, Jehoiada on Jehoiada's original estate at Mount Olive, Arkansas.

There has been some confusion about the children of Baxter. Family records from the Landers side of the family seemed to know nothing of the children by Mary Jeffery, and the Jeffery Records made no mention of his first wife, or their children. I believe this account to be more accurate. See Willie B. Landers notes for more on this.

Harvey Baxter is listed on the 1850 census in Bedford County as Henry B. age 10.

DEATH AT MT. OLIVE

H. B. Landers, Prominent Citizen, Victim of Smallpox

News was received here today of the death Tuesday of H. B. Landers at his home at Mount Olive from an attack of smallpox. Relatives of Mr. Landers in this city did not know of his illness until the day of his death. Smallpox developed at Mount Olive several weeks ago, and there were a number of cases, but none of them proved fatal, and it was thought the disease had been checked until Mr. Landers was attacked, death resulting in a few days.

Mr. Landers had been a citizen of Arkansas many years, his father's family coming here in 1845 from Tennessee. Mr. Landers was a captain in the Confederate army, being wounded in the left arm, which crippled him for life. After the war Mr. Landers settled on a farm in Izard county at Lunenburg, where he lived until two or three years ago, when he purchased a farm at Mount Olive, moving to that place, where he resided until his death. Mr. Landers was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, a consistent Christian gentleman, respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife and several children and two brothers, E. G. Landers of Melbourne and Geo. W. Landers of this city, and Mrs. Sarah Gray, mother of H. H. Luckett, who also resides in this city with her son.
