From Geoff Lakin
<A HREF="mailto:101547.1744@compuserve.com"> 101547.1744@compuserve.com </A>:

The vicar of Measham, took it upon himself, it appears, to make entries in the parish records book, on occasions, and concerning such matters, which he deemed to be worthy of note at that time, and of course, now serve as an unexpected and priceless glimpse into the past. Even more so when his writings refer to members of our own family.

The following entry is undated, but appears between two other entries which are dated, one of which is regarding the laying of new flooring tiles in the church, dated 29th March, 1836, and an entry dated November, 1836 regarding the destruction, by fire, of the local Tape Mill.

Spellings used, are as they were written.

"Richard Jewsbury his wife and three children (boys) with Maria Jewsbury his sister and Joseph Jewsbury his brother leave England for the United States of America. They go out as farmers and persons to settle in the state of Illinois or that Michigan and these are the first of this class of persons who have left this place to emigrate but it seems not unlikely others may follow as farming is now so bad a business. I regard them to carry with them the truth of Christ and in this respect regret the loss of some of them. May it be for the glory of Christ - and their temporal and eternal good !!"
