ESLIE WALTER STONE:
Reprint from Scranton Tribune (Late spring or early summer, 1919):
"There was great rejoicing last night in the 700 block of Prescott Avenue, when Oscar and Leslie Stone, brothers, came home from the war. Scores of people turned out to greet the young heroes and made it one monster welcome home party that continued until the circus trains began to roll this morning.
Oscar and Leslie are the sons of Mr. & Mrs. John M. Stone, of 725 Prescott Ave. and they went away to fight when America entered the world conflict. Oscar served 14 months with the 109th Regiment, and was on three fronts under shell fire. Leslie is a member of Company F, 103rd Engineers, which did such gallant work in building bridges across the Marne when the Yanks began chasing the Germans. Leslie was gassed twice, but is all right now. Oscar also served on the border when the 13th was called to put the quietus on the Mexicans.
And last night the two Stone boys came home. They sent word ahead that they were coming and you can imagine what their happy parents and relatives planned for them. Well, the two soldier boys arrived in Scranton around 11:30 PM over the Lackawanna railroad. Several friends kidnapped Oscar and Leslie in a big touring car and bundled them into the big machine. The dashing heroes did not know what it was all about as they whizzed through the streets toward their home. Clarence Miller, who was at the steering gear, had the cutout wide open and the noise the auto made could be heard for blocks. It was some racket.
The houses on Prescott Ave. were decorated with American flags and bunting and streamers. When Oscar and Leslie arrived they were surrounded by their friends. The happy mother and father kissed and caressed their sons and many in the crowd wept at the happy reconciliation. An extension was erected in front of the house and tables were set on this where neighbors and friends sat down to a big feast in honor of the return of the conquering heroes. There was an abundance of eats. After refreshments, the tables were moved and dancing was enjoyed for several hours."

Notes for M
ILDRED HAZEL STONE:
My grandmother, was known to me as "Nanny" growing up. I remember her apartment in New York on 18th St. She would help me (I was 8 years old) walk our dog Snoopy, while we were staying with her in 1963-64, when my parents were house-searching in N.J., and I remember her putting little boots on the four paws of the dog, so he wouldn't get salt in his paws while we walked him in the winter on the sidewalks of New York City, and Snoopy would manage to kick off the boots one by one, and Nanny would scramble around trying to put them back on the dogs feet. It was a sight to see, very funny. She would often visit us, and spent the last two years of her life living with us in Middletown, N.J. She would babysit my brother and I often when my parents would go out. She was always giving me money for little things like toys I wanted or candy or something. She and my mother, her daughter, could get into some spirited arguements on occasion. (Kevin Langan, April, 2000)
My grandmother's social security records indicate her birthdate as Sept. 23, 1900, however her gravestone indicates Sept. 20, 1899. (Kevin Langan, Dec. 2000)

RANCIS CADDEN:
"Don't know much about my grandfather, as he died soon after I was born, but I know my mother, Barbara Cadden, his daughter, did not speak very kindly about him. Most of her memories of him were of a father who was rarely there for her, and not very loving nor considerate. In fact, no one in my family ever really had anything good to say about him. His Honorable Discharge Papers from the U.S. Army indicate he enlisted Feb.24, 1918 at Ft. Slocum, New York and served with the American Expeditionary Forces in England during World War I and was discharged on Dec. 14, 1918 at Camp Devens, Mass. He died of Tuberculosis. OSEPH WARREN DANIELS:
"Joseph Warren Daniels worked in the wholesale fuel business most of his life. Son of George Riley Daniels, manager of Western-Union in Scranton for several years, and Flora Warren. "Danny" was well-known as a talented tenor, studying with the same teacher as Alan Jones (father of Jack Jones). When visiting in New York City, he used to sneak out with daughter Nancy (probably all of 5 or 6 years old) to the Bowery, where the two of them would sing with the singing waiters in various establishments. They have also been known to serenade some Scranton residents from the second floor porch of Laura and Les Stone. Danny, though sometimes a little overwhelmed by his Stone in-laws, got along very well with the "Stone Boys" and was known to tavern-hop with more than one." (Nancy Daniels Cooper)
