Descendants of Johann Matthias Glass

Generation No. 5

24. JOHN BENTON5 GLASS (ISAAC LEWIS4, ELDER LEWIS3, JOHN2, JOHANN MATTHIAS1) was born September 05, 1860 in Columbiana County, Ohio, and died January 01, 1926 in Alliance, Ohio (Columbia Movie Theatre). He married CLARA LORENA FIFER December 14, 1882 in North Georgetown, Ohio, daughter of ABRAHAM FIFER and ELIZABETH WOOLF. She was born October 10, 1865 in Columbiana County, Ohio, and died July 24, 1921 in North Georgetown, Columbiana County, Ohio.

Notes for J
OHN BENTON GLASS:
Two Documents shed some light on John Benton Glass' public service. His journal of 1892-94 includes this note: "I was elected Supervisor of District No. 19 on April 2, 1894." No other identification of school or lodge is given. The second is the Student Souvenir for North Georgetown School for 1904, which lists John Benton Glass as one of three school officers and Emmett Blaine Glass, his son, as one of the 42 pupils. Lorena Myers was the teacher.
After Clara Lorena Fifer, his wife, died in 1921, John took a room in Alliance, Ohio, and was employed at Mt. Union Cemetary. In that year, his son, Emmett, was a student at Alliance Business College, and also living on his own.
There is a public sale notice that indicates that John Benton Glass may have done work as a carpenter and plasterer. At one point he worked for Will Gross, a construction contractor and lumberman at Homeworth. At several places he rented land and raised grains. It is known that John and Clara had lived for a period in the house immediately south of the (old) schoolhouse in North Georgetown. His personal journal for 1892 said: "1892 wet weather, did not get corn planted until June 6-7. Had 6 acres corn."
The following is an advertisement placed in the Alliance Review newspaper:
"I will sell at public sale at my residence in North Georgetown on Saturday, November 10, 1906, the following property to wit: 1 mare, 14 years old, works single or double; one good top buggy; 1 canopy half platform wagon; set of single driving harness; sleigh strand of bells; tin oats box of 15 bushel capacity; five ladders of 24, 20, 16, 12, and 10 foot in length, are arranged so that an extension ladder can be made of any two of them; one step ladder, post hole digger, sledge, scythe, and many other articles not mentioned. Sale to commence at 1:00 PM sharp. Six months
credit will be allowed on all sums over $5.00 with purchaser giving note with approved security."
J.B. Glass, Grant Dellenbaugh, auctioneer.
There was a bit of mystery and intrigue about the death of John Benton Glass. He was attending a movie at the Columbia Theatre, in Alliance, on New Year's Day of 1926. He suffered a heart attack, and died instantly. He was carrying no identification. The authorities discovered his identity by tracing the laundry number on his shirt. Everyone is curious what movie he was watching?

Notes for C
LARA LORENA FIFER:
Clara Lorena Fifer was one of six children. Her youngest brother, Raymon Lester Fifer died when he was only 5 years old. Perhaps that is why her oldest son was named Lester. Clara's mother, Elizabeth Woolf, owned a double house in North Georgetown. For some years John Benton Glass and Clara lived in one side. The house was located immediately west of the former Reichenbach Garage. In 1921 this property was deeded to Clara and the Recorder's Office of Columbiana County indicates it was sold the same year.
Clara died in 1921 of tuberculosis.
