Thomas Isaac Smith owned about a section of land at the time of his death in 1860. And he four families of slaves. Thomas had a horse drawn cotton gin. Thomas became ill and went to Mississippi, to visit some Smith & Shaffer relatives, to see a doctor who might help him. He died there in Choctaw Co., Miss., and was buried in the New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Webster Co., Miss.! His son's; Matthew Smith, and George Washington Smith made the trip by train to West Point, Miss., to attend their father's funeral. Thomas Isaac Smith was also a charter member of the New Hope Baptist Church, in Hale County, Alabama. His son Levi Smith was already living there in Choctaw Co., Miss., and he and some of the Shaffer's probably met his brother's in West Point, Ms., to carry them to New Hope area!

Notes for Mark Smith:
Mark Smith purchased land on Camping Creek, Newberry Co., South Carolina, abt. 1821, he sold the property and migrated to Alabama. Several families from Newberry County settled in Alabama. He was a charter member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Greene (now Hale Co., Alabama, along with Sarah, Thomas, and Mary "Polly" Ann. The church was established in 1840. Mark Smith came to old Cahawba, Perry Co., Alabama sometime's in 1821, and bought land in 1822 in Brush Creek area. Mark and Sarah were charter member's of the New Hope Baptist Church, Hale Co., Alabama, in 1840. Minutes of the New Hope Baptist Church. Daniel L. Smith requested to be administrator of the Mark Smith estate about 1871, and stated that his father had died in 1861. The Civil War and reconstruction likely delayed settlement. Daniel asked to be removed and declared the estate to be free of debt. There is no listing of heir's, other than Daniel's statement that he was Mark's son.

Mathew and Bethany Smith were charter member's of the Hokes Bluff Baptist Church. The last record of Mathew Smith in Alabama is a deed from him to his brother Thomas Smith in Perry Co., Alabama 1856. Mathew and another brother; Luke Smith, migrated to Mississippi and settled near Maben, Miss. On the 1870 Census of Choctaw Co., Ms. page 486, Mathew lived two house's away from son Elisha R. & Martha Smith.
