20 Dec 2000. "Of the thirteen known children of John and Mary Moore Summers, all lived into adulthood and only one (James) predeceased his parents. It appears that the children moved from Prince George's County into Frederick County, and then to other points, but did not leave Maryland until after their father's death. (There are records in other states of five of the 13 children.)."

"George Alfred Townsend in his "Washington, Outside and Inside" published in 1874, page 706, describes the Woodyard in connection with the 1814 approach of British Troops "The Wood-yard stands at the source of Piscataway Creek and near by the ground is marshy. An old mill, mill-race and a couple of deserted barns are within a few furlongs distance in an old sleeping field. The aspect of the place is dismal except that a large dwelling surveys a part of the scenery from a moundy hill about the deep dell of the stream"." Information about the Wood Yard, mentioned in John's will.

John was an adult in 1703 when his father wrote his will. By 1710, John was participating in business affairs. It is assumed that he could have been around 25 years of age then so his birth was probably ca 1685, and thus likely he was born in Maryland.

Indenture 2 sep 1709 between Wm Somers, Prince George's Co planter, and John Somers same co. planter....sell all rights title and interest in parcel of land called Pitchcrofe, "lying on westside of Patuxent River in the Freshes". Consideration was 1,500 lbs. tobacco. Witnessed by John Marklin and Richard Groom. Prince George's Land Records Book E old Series 5/284 records the above Indenture with the notation "enrolled Oct 21, 1713". Pitchcroft was sold to Arthur Neale 10 Jul 1713. Signed John Summers. On back is note "fro Mr. Arden Careton merchant in London.

Prince George's Land Records Liber E/197.Indenture 1 Aug 1713 between Thos Clagatt of Prince George's Co. and John Somers for tract called Moors Adition west side patuxent River in the woods and in the fork of Piscataway Branch adjacent to part of parcel surveyed for James Moore caleed Child's Portion laid out for 231 acres. Enrolled Oct 21 1713. Survey for Moore's Addition is dated 16 Feb 1694 (Prince George's Land Rent-tax 4/316). Thos Clagett had purchased Moores Adition from James Moore 28 Aug 1712. At the deat of Mary Moore Summers, the lower portion next to the Woodyeard was bequeathed to son Dent and the rest to son Benjamin.

Land Records I/546.Indenture between James Moore, Sen., of Prince George's Co. and son-in-law John Summers of same county also planter for "natural affection and fatherly love" a tract of 35 acres called Child's Portion. July 20 1723.Remarks: on the same day John Summers "for natural affection and loving duty" deeded to father-in-law James Moore Sen. 35 acres of a tract called Addition. Prince George's Co. Land Records I457.The Certificate for Child's Portion (Prince George's Land Records B 23/242) for James Moore was dated 1694 for 227 acres. By virtue of warrant of 500 acres granted to Thomas Moore of Calvert Co. bearing date 22 Aug 1694 on west sode of Patomac River, in the woods and in the freshes of the said river and in the forks of a branch called Piscattaway and next adjoining parcel surveyed for Col Ninian Beale called Maidens Dowery. Original survey 11 Jul 1671, Calver Co. Prince George's Land Rent Tax 4/362.

""In the Name of God Amen I John Summers Sen. of Prince Georges County being mindful of the uncertainty of Human Life and of perfect mind memory and understanding Doe make Ordain and Constitute this to be my Last Will & Testament in manner and form following / that is to say First I give and bequeath unto my loving Wife Mary Summers all the Land and Plantation where I now live called Addition during her natural Life and after her Decease I give and bequeath fifty acres of the Tract of Land aforesaid to be laid off at the Lower end next to the Wood Yard unto my son Dent Summers his Heirs and Assigns forever. I also give and bequeath all the remaining part of the said Tract of Land where I now dwell called Addition unto my son Benjamin Summers his heirs and assigns forever. And as for any Personal Estate which it has pleased God to Bless me with I give and bequeath unto my Loving wife Mary Summers during her life and after her Decease I give and bequeath my Negro Man Charles unto my Daughter Rebeckah King and all the remaining part of my estate after my wife's Decease to be equally Divided among my Children namely John Summers, George Summers, William Summers, Dent Summers, Thomas Summers, Benjamin Summers, Joseph Summers, Mary Wheat, Rebeckah King, Rachel Johnson, Rugh Riggs, and Jemima Caton and doe Constitute and appoint my Loving Wife Mary Summers my whole and Sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament and doe Revoke disanul and make void all other Wills by me heretofore made.
