Updated February 24, 2003

About Our Family Research

My name is Joanie (Bean) Long. I was born in 1968 in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. I have been researching my family tree for the past 4 years. On my father's side I descend from the surnames BEAN, BASKIN, PORTER, McMILLAN, SEARS, TEMPLE, GIMLIN, CHAMBLISS, MABRAY, ERWIN, WOOD, FROST, LASTER, BRADLEY, DAVIS, LINTON and others. Most of this branch of my family has been in the area of Johnson County, Arkansas for the past few generations. On my mother's side I descend from the surnames HARRIS, WARREN, LONG, SMITH, LUTES/LUTZ, WHARTON, COWAN, TUTTLE and others. Most of these branches have also been in Johnson County, Arkansas for many generations. I am interested in finding out as much as I can about these ancestors. I want to gather stories, documents, and especially photos to add to my books so that I may pass it down to my 3 children and my future grandchildren. I currently have photos of my parents, all 4 of my grandparents, 6 of my great-grandparents, 10 of my 2nd great grandparents and 7 of my 3rd great grandparents. I am very proud of these photos and hope to collect even more. I would be happy to share what I have with others as well.

  • Bob & Elizabeth Baskin and children (1 KB)
My great-great grandparents...Robert McKinley (Bob) Baskin & Rebecca "Elizabeth" (Gimlin) Baskin with their large brood of children. Bob was born 1855 in Harmony, Johnson County, Arkansas, and died 1937 at age 81 in the same location. Elizabeth was born 1860 in Forsythe, Taney County, Missouri, the same year the Civil War began. When she was around 6 years old her family fled Missouri after bushwhackers raided and burned their home and murdered her two oldest brothers. They settled in the mountains of northwest Arkansas. She died 1946 at age 86 in Ozone, Johnson County, Arkansas. Bob also suffered from the Civil War strife. When he was a boy of about 10 he and his father found one of his great-grandpas hanging dead from a tree in the woods, the victim of bushwhackers. Bob & Elizabeth were married 1879 in Johnson County, Arkansas and were the parents of 14 children, born between 1880 and 1903. Son Ollie died at age 3, and daughters Chloe & Roxie both died at age 28. But, the other 11 children lived long and productive lives. On August 9, 1880, when Elizabeth was 7 months pregnant with their 1st child, a tornado hit their home and knocked it off it's foundation. According to daughter Tugie, one of Robert's favorite expressions was "put the glimntry on it", which meant he wished to do an extra special job of finishing up something he was working on. If he wanted the children to slow down he would yell "Don't be so rampasscrugus." And, if something was done right, Robert said it was "percumsquirt".
  • Will Porter (125 KB)
This is my great-great grandfather William Hartel (Will) Porter, who lived 1848-1938. He spent his entire life in Harmony, Johnson County, Arkansas. His father died the same year he was born, and his mother died soon after. So, he was raised by a grandfather, and grew up an only child. He was a veteran of the Civil War, signing up near the end when he was a young teenager of about 16. When he died at age 90, he was one of two remaining Civil War veterans in Johnson County, Arkansas.
  • Charlie & Clarence Bean (251 KB)
These are my great grandparents, Charlie Dessie (Porter) Bean and Ira "Clarence" Bean. He was born 1885 in Harmony, Johnson County, Arkansas, and died 1971 at age 86 in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. She was born 1888 in Clarksville and died 1952 at age 63 in Clarksville. The two were married in 1906 and were the parents of 7 children, one of which died at 10 months old.
