Generation No. 4

6. WILLIAM B4 RICHARDS (MARY POLLY3 SAPP, ELIZABETH2 KING, BENAJAH1) was born 1816 in Tennessee, and died 1892. He married CATHERINE BURCH. She was born 1822, and died 1875.

Notes for W
ILLIAM B RICHARDS:
William was the first born child to Charles Harrison and Mary Sapp Richards. He was born in Tennessee in 1818. He was 18 years old in 1836, when the family moved from Alabama to San Augustine, Texas.
The Republic of Texas Army rolls list him as a volunteer in Captain Moffitt's Army. In April, 1836, he fought in the battle of San Jacinto. He guarded the Mexican General, Santa Anna, after his capture. A prized possession of William's was a silver star that he cut from Santa Anna's saddle. The silver star in now on exhibit in the Alamo.
The Republic of Texas awarded William a headright for land for serving during the war with Mexico. This land, located one mile south of San Augustine, Texas, was later sold to his brother, James. After returning to Shelby County, William married Catherine Burch in San Augustine, Texas. William also had a headright for land in Bosque County, TX. They did not move to Bosque County for several years. His children were born in other Texas counties. The following is a quote from The Bosque Coutny History. "William B. Richards, whose first days in Texas were marked by the voilence fo the Revolution, died in violence...the old soldier, who had been sandbagged in Houston for four or five days earlier, died of his injuries today, Dec. 22, 1892 at the home of his son, William Warren. After he was brought from Houston and landed at the home of his son, the old man became conscious for several hours and in that said lucid interim explained how the robbery was consummated."
