Ira and his wife Margaret along with James, Inez, Edith, and Gerald migrated to Kansas starting from Michigan in a covered wagon, in the fall of 1878. They had $56.00, two ordinary horses, a marble-top dresser, and such personal effects as they had or could bring. They journeyed as far as Belton, Missouri (south of Kansas City, before winter set in. There they wintered, getting such employment as they could. In the spring they resumed their journey...destination...Ness County, Kansas, getting as far as Hutchinson, Kansas. While heading north toward Nickerson, Kansas they were overtaken by a severe hail-storm. It was at this place, now known as Yaggy. At that time it was just tall grass country along the Arkansas River. When this hail-storm hit, Margaret said with a certain finality in her voice and manner, "I am not going one step farther". They settled right there. Ira and James secured work making hay to feed the horses, used in the construction of the Santa Fe R.R. farther west. Later they hauled buffalo bones from Barber, or Comanche Co. Inez and Edith secured some work also. Here they lived two or three years, until about 1881, when they bought what is known as a "relinquishment" on a quarter of land in Kingman, County...2 and one half miles west of Penalosa, Kansas. Here they lived until the death of Margaret in 1924. The land was inherited by Gerald Palmer who soon squandered the property and then sold it.
