- MYSTERY PHOTO #6 - Which CAMPBELL in the 1800s? (12 KB)
According to Jo Sutton Weedon, this photo was identified by Winifred Campbell Sutton [1884-1974] as Joseph A. Campbell [1825-1907] & Melinda Ireland Campbell [1836-1887]. The problem is that she identified a photo of the bearded man alone as "my father Samuel Campbell [1849-1888]" which has to be wrong because Samuel died at age 39 and this man looks at least 70 or better. She was only 4 when her father died and this was written much later. "Joseph and Melinda Campbell" may be her father Samuel Campbell and her mother, Lydia Moore [1851-1913]. Her mother lived a long time. Her father may have had a white beard and she just thought that was he. We will never know unless someone else has a picture of Joseph Campbell. They lived in Ohio & Iowa. WE WOULD LOVE TO SOLVE THIS MYSTERY. [Photo from the collection of Jo Sutton Weedon - weedonj@juno.com]

Timothy Riordan [1817-1910] was the 5th of 12 known children of Dennis Riordan & Ellen Murphy. He and his siblings were all born in a cottage in Fonnought, Donoughmore, Cork, Ireland, between about 1810-1832. The family was turned off their land in about 1845 and emigrated to Bradford, England where conditions for the Irish immigrants were crowded and life was hard. After Timothy & his wife Alice Knowles had buried two babies in Bradford, they emigrated to America about 1848 and it was there in Troy, New York that their children Dennis Matthew & Helen were born. Although another son, John, died on their way through the Great Lakes to Chicago, and Alice died giving birth to their son Willie, Dennis Matthew and Helen lived long and productive lives. Matt died in 1928, at the age of 80, and Helen in 1945, at the age of 95. Matt was the father of Helene, Marie & Elizabeth. His sister Helen married William Dennison Ketchum and was the mother of Alice, George, Frank, Helen, Gertrude, Florence, Jane, Eunice & Raymond. - Edward W. Chambers about 1920 (68 KB)
From Robert L. Chambers' 1974 Memoir: "My father used to tell me of the tales that happened to him in his younger days, I remember one particular one when he was a baby in his mother's arms riding in on the Chicago Northwestern train from Waukegan to Chicago. The conductor, who was a friend of my father's mother, asked her why she was taking her baby into Chicago and she said, naturally to shop. He said to her. "Mrs. Chambers get off the train at the next atop. A bubonic plague has hit Chicago, babies are dying right and left, and you will sound the baby's death knell if you go any farther." So she got off the train at the next stop, turned around and went back. This conductor was the original Mr. Armour who afterwards founded the Armour Packing Company, and in his later years like all the big shots of Chicago, used to spend the winter at either the Green or the Raymond Hotel in Pasadena, and every time he would run into dad or mother he would brag over the fact that if it had not been for him, my father would not have been alive."

- Robertson Haward Coat of Arms (165 KB)
From William Vergo, Chester Herald, college of Arms, "the Arms displayed in the first and fourth quarters of the shield together with the first Crest are identical with those duly granted by Letters Patent bearing date the 25th May 1612 to Samuel Haward of the Isle of Hartye in the county of Kent, by William Segar, Garter King of Arms. Samuel is said to be the son of William Haward and grandson of Stephen Haward, and the Coat blazoned:
Arms: Or a bull's head cabossed between three mullets sable.
Crest: An arm vested sable cuffed or holding in the hand proper a human heart gulse,
wilst the Arms depicted in the second and third quarters of the shield together with the second Crest and the chained man device is the very ancient Coat of the Robertsons of Straun or Strown in county Perth, Scotland. . . registered in the records of Lyon King of Arms in Scotland in 1672 and is blazoned:
Arms: Gules three wolves heads erased argent armed and langued azure: lying on a compartment under the Arms a wind man chained.
Crest: a dexter and hand erect holding a regal crown all proper. . .the motto in the scroll pendent from the armorial cartouche, namely VIRTUTIS GLORIA MERCES (Glory is the reward for valour) is that long used by the aforementioned Robertson family and the fact that the Crests of both Haward and Robertson are included above the shield in the achievement would suggest that double name of Robertson-Haward.

- A Picture is Worth . . .Part of a Mystery solved. (53 KB)
Finding long lost Family: These 3 photos were among those kept by Olaf Fredrik Malmgren, and by eventually his family & descendents, for over 120 years. Originally O. Fred would have known who each of these babies were. By the late 20th century his descendents only wished that they had been identified in some way. Then in July of 2001, one of his granddaughters recognized one of the baby pictures on this very website. The baby with the hat was identified here with the heading 1885 Carl Henry Malmgren [born in Nebraska]. She had found the another branch of the Malmgren family. They had not known of each other's whereabouts since the 1920s. Many excited emails later our family is richer with knowledge that we have been able to share with each other thanks to this discovery. Now we only hope to identify the photos of the other two babies. They were most probably children of the 4 Malmgren brothers who immigrated to America in the 1870, or perhaps of their 7 Swedish siblings who stayed behind in Malmo. The search continues.

- Amalie Wilhemine Boy about 1918 (21 KB)
The information that we have on Amalie is incomplete. We know that she lived in Hamburg, Germany from the 1890s to the 1930s. She was married to Fredrich Kassel and together they were the parents of five daughters and one son, born between 1893 and 1901. When her daughter, Marie Hertha, was asked by HER daughter where her mother came from, she only replied, "From the East." We are searching for information on the origins of her surname and details of her family and early life.

- Hertha Kassell & Charlie Howard about 1920 (66 KB)
Charles Edwin Robertson Howard was born in Ft. Scott, Kansas in 1880, the son of English parents. In the early 1900s he went to live in Germany with his sister May, who had married Antonio von Riedemann and lived on a large estate. He lived a life of luxury for a time and met Hertha Kassel, who was on the stage in Hamburg, Germany. They married just after the war. His sister disapproved of the relationship and cut herself off from Charlie and his new family. Charlie brought his wife and daughter back to the US, where he had been born and supported his family for the rest of his life as a manual laborer during the depression.

- A B Demill: Why did Lucelia Have his photo? (60 KB)
This photo was found in the family bible begun by Lucelia Fralick Stewart and treasured by her great granddaughter. It is printed on thin paper and apparently from a newspaper. Lucelia was the daughter of Timothy Fralick & Maria Demill(e). We have never had much information about Maria. A family researcher, in recent years, passed on that she was "of the Missasaugua people" and we have never had much more than that. ================ Recent information received from another Demill research, Laurie Demill Watley, has already cleared up SOME of the mystery. ============== Laurie writes," A. B. Demille was Alfred Bryon (or possibly Byron) Demille. He was born July 10, 1831, in North Port, Sophiasburg, Prince Edward Co., Ontario. (If you look on a modern map of Ontario, Canada, North Port is near the present location of Belleville, Ontario, which is mid-way between Kingston and Toronto on the shore of Lake Ontario.) A. B. Demille was a preacher. He was educated at Victoria College in Cobourg, Ontario as a Methodist Minister. He founded and was president of the Demille Ladies' College in Oshawa, Ontario. He married M. Lucillia Hurd of Raglan, Ontario (also near present day Belleville) Aug. 1854 in Picton, Prince Edward Co., Ontario." Thanks to Laurie for this great information. ===================== Now if we could only figure out HOW he might have been related to Maria & her family it would be an exciting breakthrough. - John Allen Davis 1919-1969 (50 KB)
What is in a name? When the second son of Doris Aileen Fralick and John Newton Davis was born, his mother called him "John Eugene" and told the doctor, "We're naming him after you." The family thought nothing more of this for many years. The boy's first name was the same as his father's and his father was a staunch support of Eugene V. Debs, which accounted for his middle name. Doris and the rest of the family always called the little boy "Gene" throughout his childhood. Many years later, Gene applied for a passport and needed his birth certificate. He was quite surprised to find that all those years ago the doctor had filled it out with the name, "John Allen." He decided that since he had never liked being called "Gene" he'd keep his new found name, and ever after he refused to answer to the name of "Gene."
- Eulalie Mercier about 1875 (1 KB)
Eulalie was the daughter of Dominique Mercier & Eulalie Goy. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana about 1850. She married Hermann Vennemann about 1870 and was the mother of at least 8 children. Family lore has it that she 'died in childbirth.' Her last child, Marguerite, was born in November of 1884. A "Mrs. N. Vennomon, age:34" was buried in D. Mercier's plot in St. Louis #3 Cemetery in New Orleans, LA on December 16, 1884. ============================
As to Eulalie's origins: The New Orleans City Directory from 1822 lists a widow "Mimi Goy" at 7 Peace Street. Could this be Eulalie's mother? The 1841 New Orleans City Directory lists a Mlle. Goy, milliner & dressmaker, at 84 Main Street. Could this be Eulalie? The first record that we have of her as Dominique Mercier's wife is in 1843 as the mother of Françoise Mercier. ===========================
Although family legend has held that Dominique was born in France, a copy of his death certificate of August 19, 1876 identifies him as a native of New Orleans, age 63 [which makes his birth year about 1813]. Birth certificates, from 1843-1851, of the children of Eulalie Goy and Dominique Mercier identify both Dominique & Eulalie as "free persons of color" who are natives of Louisiana. ========================
The Sacramental Registers of the Archdiocese of New Orleans have records for both Dominique Mercier & Eulalie Goy. Vol. 11, page 303, list Dominique as the son of Jean Mercier & Josephine Aubin. His birth date is given as April 21, 1814 and he was baptized in St. Louis Cathedral on August 14, 1815. His sponsors were: Dominique Ga_?_, & his grandmother, Marie Magdre du Chance. His mother is identified as a native of Cap François, St. Domingue [Haiti] & his father of St. Surin, Bordeaux, France. The same sacramental registers list Eulalie Goy [sponsors: Bernard Lafosse & Eulalie Rocheblave] as the daughter of Elisabeth Goy. They also list another daughter of Elisabeth's, Martha Pauline Goe. [sponsors: Paul Prudent Audier & Martha Roup]. =========================== Various other baptismal records of the children of Jean Mercier & Josephine [variously spelled Aubin, Oubeine, Robin & Nantais] list: Marie Françoise [sponsors: Marie Virginie Tasbon & Jacques Ajaud], Elisabeth [sponsors: Elisabeth Lecam & Thomas Touchet], Marie Josephine [sponsors: Julien Dunjon & Marie Cabaville] & Victoire Joseph [sponsor: Dyonisis Leon] most of the sponsors were listed as natives of St. Domingue. ===================== Another interesting note is that in the 1822 New Orleans City Directory, Jean Thiac [of Thiac, Maignan & Durand, blacksmiths] is listed at 167 Levee bel. Champs Elysees. Jean's residence address is listed as 6 Peace, either directly next door, or directly across the street from the widow Mimi Goy. The name Thiac [Theac] appears again in relation to the Mercier family. November 29, 1891 John H. Theac, aged 31, is buried in Dominique Mercier's plot in St. Louis #3 Cemetery. The National Archives lists a Jean Ulysse Thiac [colored, male] born June 1, 1850 to Marie Mercier & Jean Ulysse Thiac, volume 10, page 292. ============================== It appears that the John Theac who is buried in D. Mercier's plot in St. Louis #3, may be the son of Jean Thiac and one of the sisters of Dominique Mercier. [Photo from the collection of Carol Theis Baarts]
- Hermann Vennemann about 1875 (91 KB)
Hermann was born in Quakenbrück, Osnabrück, Hannover, Germany in 1845. He was the son of Fredrich Vennemann [1811-1879] & Rosalie Müller [1819-1879] who were also born in Quakenbrück. Hermann emigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana. [We have recently learned that Hermann was married to Katharina Liebert June 6, 1864 in New Orleans and that they had a son, George, who was born November 30, 1866 & died August 5, 1899 in New Orleans. WE WOULD LOVE TO FIND DESCENDENTS OF GEORGE'S DAUGHTER LILLIAN.] Herman married Eulalie Goy December 21, 1872. They were the parents of at least 8 children and lived at No. 242 ½ Esplanade and at No. 468 Royal Street in the City. City records indicate that during the 1870s Hermann was a clerk for D. Mercier. Hermann died in 1895 and was buried in St. Louis Cemetery #3 on December 30, 1895. Other residence addresses for Hermann in the late 1800s include: 214 Orleans St.; 128 N. Rampart; 458 Ursulines; 301 Dauphine; & 2624 Ursuline, all in New Orleans. [Photo from the collection of Carol Theis Baarts]

Although Grandmére would have never told us WHICH birthday we were celebrating on September 19, 1958, we now know [or do we?] that it was her 75th. There were several things that Grandmére told us a lady never does: tell her age, or show her elbows or knees. While she was telling our parents that, "The ch'rin must be tired or hungry," she was chastising us that, "It's gonna end wrong!" And one final predicton, "It's all down hill after 16!"

Nathalie was the matriarch of her family, even though she and her husband Joseph Arthur "Jack" Mathé never had any children. She firmly believed that "the ugliest part of a woman's body is the backs of her elbows and knees."
- MAP-Meyer zu Mecklendorf, Pötter& Plogmann-Germany (1 KB)
I have been hunting for information on my 5g grandmother, Catarina Liesbeth Meyer zu Mecklendorf, for several years. All that I knew of her was her name & that she & Johann Herman Pötter had a daughter, Catarina Liesbeth Pötter, who [according to my great uncle MJ Riordan, in 1916] "was baptized in the parish church in Hagen, [Osnabrück,] Hannover, Germany May 12, 1770." After her we also have information on her daughter, Catharina Elisabeth Herkenhoff, also baptized in that church March 2, 1803, as was her husband, Gerard Heinrich Rietbrock on April 29, 1795 & his mother, Catharina Maria Plogmann.
Recently, Anke Waldmann, very kind & generous genealogist, whom I met on-line, provided me with this map of the area in the Germany where the Meyer zu Mecklendorf , Pötter & Plogmann families lived [note the red arrows]. She also sent me the following explanation of how they may have taken their surnames.
"Meyer originally was not a name but a profession. Charlemagne conquered the area around Osnabrück about 780 AD. A Meyer was something between mayor, judge and policeman. As payment for doing this job the Meyer got a farm the "Meyerhof" (Meyer-farm). This term is still known in the German language. At first these farms could not be bequeathed from father to son but that changed over the centuries. Simultaneously the Meyer lost his importance as official. But the name of the farms stayed and the people were called after the name of the farms they lived on, Meyer became a name. There happened to be quite a few Meyer farms . . . so the people separated these families by adding something to the name. Sometimes they added something in front of the name like "Deitemeyer", but most of the time they added something behind the name. Normally this addition was the name of the town the Meyers lived in. . . of course every Meyer who has an addition to his name is proud of it for it separates his family from the uncountable amount of Meyers. According to the language the people used the "zu" sometimes was "to". "Zu" is High German while "to" is Low German. So this proves that Low German is much more related to English than the High German that we speak nowadays. . .I once was told that Meyers written with "y" lived in catholic areas and Meier with "i" come from Lutheran. First only the family of the owner of the "Meyerhof" was named with the addition. The siblings who left the farm where just called Meyer. That is the reason why there are so many Meyers existing in Germany. This habit changed during the 19th century. Emigrants didn't used their addition after reaching their destination so that is the reason why there are no "Meyer zu …" in the USA. Of course this makes family research difficult. "
