1. PATRICK1 FOGARTY was born in County Tipperary, Ireland. He married MARY TWOMEY.
Notes for PATRICK FOGARTY:
Patrick Fogarty owned two pubs in Cork City Ireland.
The Fogarty family mainly came from the Templederry area. In Templederry is the Eliogarty castle, once owned by Fogarty's until driven out by the British in the 14th century. The Fogarty family also owned the "inch house" in Bouladuff and
the Fogarty castle that is located in Ballycahill.
Fogarty Motto: "Fleadh agus Failte" meaning "Banquet (or Party) and Welcome"
Arms: "Azure two lions rampant combatant supporting a garb all or, in dexter base a
cresent argent in sinister base a harp of the second stringed of the third."
Ancient Spellings: O'Fhogartaigh, O'Fogartaigh, O'Fogartach, O'Fogartagh, O'Fogarty, O'Fogerty.
The Irish surname Fogarty is an anglicised form of the Irish Gaelic O'Fogartha. The prefix
'O' signifies "descendant or son of", and 'fogartha' is claimed to have been derived from the
Gaelic word for "exiled or outlawed", we have learned that this is not the true translation.
It is strange that the Fogartys would have an Irish name indicating that they were outlaws,
as they are referred to in the Annals of Ulster of 1072, as the "Kings of Ely"(before the Anglo
-Irish Invasion). We have also heard 'Fogharthacht' to be translated more correctly as "noisy".
The Fogartys gave their name to the Barony of Eliogarty, in Co. Tipperary, via the English
phonetic spelling of "Eile ui Fhogartaigh", and the chief of the sept lived here in Eliogarty
Castle. This barony lies between the Slieveardagh Mountains to the South-East, the Slieve Bloom
Mountains to the North, and the Silvermine and Slieve Felim Mountains to the West.
In modern times, the clan name is rarely found in English with an "O" prefix. One branch of
the family was known as Mag Fhogartaigh, and derived from this comes Gogarty.
Although Fogarty is still a fairly prominent name in Co. Tipperary, the ancient Clan castle,
as well as the newer Castle Fogarty, are no longer in their hands.
Notable bearers of the Clan name include Malachy O'Fogarty, who was born in Castle Fogarty. He was alive around the beginning of the 17th century, and had a career at the University of Paris. Archbishop Michael Fogarty (1858-1955), was the Bishop of Killaloe for 51 years from 1904. Born in Jilcoleman, he was a fearless champion of the Irish cause during the War of Independance and spoke out against the outrages of the "Blach & Tans" (British Forces). Modern day famous Fogartys include Britian's Carl Fogarty, World Superbike Champion Racer, and American John Fogerty, singer & song writer, of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame. Places named after Fogartys include Fogarty's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada (this was named for Jeff's family who first settled in this area, and Stan Rogers wrote a song for it); Fogarty Creek State Park, Oregon, USA; the Fogarty Gap, which is along the route of the old gold convoys from the Bendigo Mine to Melbourne, in Australia; the Thomas Fogarty Winery & Vineyards, Woodside, California, USA, named after its owner, inventor & cardiovascular surgeon, Thomas Fogarty; and the Patrick Fogarty Secondary School, Orillia, Ontario, Canada, named after Father Patrick Fogarty.
