 Includes NotesNotes for Johann Kuehl:
Johann & George did not want to serve 7 years in the army. In 1850 they got jobs on a windjammer (A windjammer was a type of sailing ship with a large iron or steel hull, used for cargo in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. They were the grandest of cargo sailing ships) for 4 years. In 1854 George decided to stay in America. Johann enjoyed the life at sea, so with the desire to see the world he continued on to South America. while in port there some of the crew developed yellow fever. In an endeavour to cure this they were given castor oil to drink, some could not tolerate this as it made the vomit, but for Johann it was fortunate in that it weakened the fever. While others died in agony on the beach, he survived. Johann pushed on to Africa. Crossing the Indian Ocean he decided to try life in Australia. He was shipwrecked near Port Macdonnell (bewteen Portland and Port Macdonnell. In Port Macdonnell he became known as "Jimmie". Johann boat a lighter (A large boat or barge, mainly used in unloading or loading vessels which can not reach the wharves at the place of shipment or delivery) called Louise. His lighter usually carried wool, grain and pebbles from the Port Macdonnell shores used for amunition

After selling his share of the lighter her rented the Travellers Rest Inn at Allendale for a short time but lack of patronage due to a falling away of road travellers caused him to move. With his meagre
savings and growing family he invested in a small farm at mil lel where he kept cows, pigs and poultry. He lived there near the present Kraft factory until he died. After this his family moved to live in
