- Legal Tender Yellow Dent Corn (112 KB)
Corn was developed by D.B. Nims and John Welton Nims.
Dwight B. Nims and John Welton Nims entered farming just as the efforts to improve seed corn took on a scientific turn. In Illinois Gordon Hopkins developed an improved species call Reid’s Yellow Dent. Reid won all the early State Fair Contests with his variety thus stimulating the development of the seed corn business.
Dwight took short courses during the winter months at Iowa State University. He improved his understanding of corn pollination and the men came to know the elder Henry Wallace from the Wallace’s Farmer magazine. They visited in each other’s homes quite often. Using this new technique the Nims Brothers improved on Reid’s seed. They developed a larger ear with larger grain and registered it as “Legal Tender Yellow Dent”. It won many prizes during the 1890’s in Iowa and Nebraska. They won a diploma at the World’s Fair in Paris, France. At the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 their entry won a silver medal.
