Arrived in New World August 08, 1682 on the Amity, Master Richard Diamond.
Ships list records him as arriving with wife, Jane and 2 servants - John and William Beckingham. Also states he settled in Chichester. States emigrated from Newgate-in-Whitney, Oxford shire, ENGLAND.

C&RF says he was one of the earliest physicians practicing in Chester County but it is not know where he got his medical knowledge.

Will is recorded in Philadelphia, Deed book C, p234, file no 190-1710. Date of will 7-6-1705, proved Feb 16, 1710/11. Mentions children and grandchildren in will ( Joseph's 2 elest ch. Susanna and Joseph, son Nathanil's ch. William, Nathaniel & Elizabeth, son-in-law Humprhey Scarlott, Dau Ann Scarlott & her eldest son, dau Susanna Lowns & her children, Joseph, James, Hannah & Susanna). Executor: wife Jone. Overseers: Philip Roman, Robert Pyle. Wit.: Henry Barnes, Thomas Bowater (Phila Will Abstracts, 1682-1726, p 125)

Came to Philadelphia from New Gate, Oxfordshire, England in 1682, having purchased land from William Penn before he came (as had his son, Joseph, in 1681). Joseph Richards is among those listed 21Feb-15Apr 1682 as shippers by the Amity, Mr. Richard Dymond, bound from London for Pennsylvania (Coldham, p 389).


At MM Chester 10mo 6,1686 "the difference betweene Joseph Richards & Willm Woodmansey offered to ye Meeting in order to a composure of ye same, Willm Woodmansey did acknowledge he spoke foolishly in comparing him to a London pick pocket and ye lake & that he was greived and sorry for ye same, wch Joseph Richards did accept desiring & intending Hereby yt ther be an end of strife from ye beginning to this day.

(Marianne Wolfman): Joseph was apparently stubborn or quarrelsome about paying bills, as indicated by the subject being taken up at a Quarterly Meeting held at Chester on 4 6m 1684 and a MM held at Chester 6 10m 1686. In the first, Joseph was ordered to pay Charles ASHCOM "without any further disturbance"in the second, William WOODSMANEY apologized for comparing Joseph to ä London pickpocket". In a matter taken up by Chester MM an 1 1m 1686 concerning a dispute between Joseph RICHARDS and Hugh DURBUROW, it was "agreed that Joseph Richards do forthwith dispatch to the said Hugh his wages according to the contract and that Hugh abate him 16/20 shillings for loss of time" Chester MM Records, 1681-1721). At a MM at Chester on 6 4m 1692, Joseph was ordered to pay a bill for rent from the excecutors of Tho. BRASSEY. (Jordan p 1072)
