VaErCen02 Miscellaneous Markham Data Early Virginia Census/Tax

compiled by: Pamela Hutchison Garrett 1401 E Hefner Rd Oklahoma City,
Ok 73131 Jan/Feb 1998

note from Pam Garrett----I have records of Markhams early in Virginia,
beginning in the 1630’s. But, these early Virginia records are scarce and it
is difficult to sort out and understand the various groups of Markhams. I
have compiled these early tax and census records to provide a bridge between
the Markhams that appear in the 17th and early 18th century---to those second,
third and fourth generation Markhams in Virginia who are living around the
time of the Revolutionary War. I am also trying to identify the various
counties that they moved into, usually right after the Revolutionary War. I
have carried these records through the early 19th century.

Markham Early In Virginia from Census and Tax Roll records

note- the 1790 and 1810 census for Virginia is incomplete and the 1800 census
is lost. I have not found a ‘replacement’ for the 1800 decade.

Early Virginia Records-Tax Records pre 1800
Tax and Rent Rolls, census replacement data- from several sources

*Pittsylvania co, Va
Pittsylvania co, Va 1782 Tax Roll
John Markham 5 white, 9 black 1782 tax record
John Markham 13 slaves, 6 horses, 32 cattle 1787 tax record

*Chesterfield co, Va
Bernard Markham 8 white, 30 black 1783 tax roll
George Markham 10 white, 19 black 1783 tax roll

Bernard Markham 36 slaves, 13 horses, 33 cattle, 4 wheeled carriages
     personal property tax 1786

John Markham charged with Tax - Barnard Markham
personal property tax 1788 (brother or son of Bernard Markham)

Bernard Markham 8 white souls, 30 black 1790 tax record?
George Markham 10 white souls, 19 black 1790 tax record?

*Powhatan co, Va
Vincent Markham 4 white, 17 black 1783 tax roll

Vincent Markham 15 slaves, 4 horses, 35 cattle, 4 phaeton wheels
B and V Markham 22 slaves, 7 horses, 2 cattle
personal property tax 1787 (B and V -brothers, Bernard and Vincent

Vincent Markham 4 white souls, 17 black 1790 tax record?

note: John of Pittsylvania co, Bernard and George of Chesterfield and
Vincent of Powhatan are all sons of John Markham whose will is of record 1770
in Chesterfield co, Va. Another son, William Markham died in 1782 in
Chesterfield co, Va and so does not appear here.

*Prince Edward co, Va
Arthur Markham no white souls, 1 dwelling, 1 other building 1785 tax

*Bedford co, Va
Arthur Markham	self, 2 horses, 11 cattle 1787 personal property tax
note-current research support that Arthur Markham is descendant of Thomas
Markham early in Henrico co, Va 1636. Arthur Markham Sr removed from Prince
Edward co to Bedford co, Va c.1785. Four indentified sons (1) Thomas to
Bedford co, Va (2) John/Jonathan to Botetourt co, Va (3) James probably to
Georgia (4) Arthur Jr to Georgia. Arthur Markham Sr probably had a brother
or cousin Thomas Markham who is progenitor to some of the Markhams in Franklin
co, Va

*Franklin co, Va
Abner Marcum nothing named 1787PP
James Markham 3 horses, 12 cattle 1787PP
John Markham 2 horses, 4 cattle 1787PP
William Markham 1 horse, 2 cattle 1787PP
Thomas Markhan 1 horse, 3 cattle 1787PP
note-current research suggests a connection for these Markham/Marcums to
Thomas Markham who was in Henrico co, Va 1636. They were likely in Bedford
co, Va and then their properties fell in Franklin co, Va when it was formed
from Bedford in 1785. Some descendants of this group probably moved on to
Stokes co, NC. Eventually most went to Kentucky and Tennessee

*Montgomery co,
John Marcum 1 tithe, 0 slaves, 2 horses 1782 tax list
William Marcum 1 tithe, 0 slaves, 2 horses 1782 tax list
Josiah Markham 1 slave, 2 horses, 4 cattle 1787 PP tax
Josiah Markham 011 1789 tax list
John Markham 001 1789 tax list
note-to date there is no clear evidence of how the Markham/Marcums in
Montgomery and Giles co, Va fit into earlier Markham families, but there is a
suggested relationship to the Markhams in Bedford co, Va. Most of these
Markham/Marcums remove to Wayne co,Ky

*Washington co, Va
William Markham 1 horse, 6 cattle Pptax 1787
note - I do not recognize who this William Markham might be, but would
consider whether he might be the William Marcum in the 1782 tax record in
Montgomery co, Va

*Amherst PP Tax 1787
Thomas Markam charged with tax-Samuel Scott PP tax 1787
note- not clear who this might be. I rechecked to see if this might
actually be in Amelia co, Va, but it is in Amhurst. Might be connected to
the Markhams in Bedford/Botetourt or Franklin co, Va. But, also might have
relationship to Markhams of Stafford/Fauquier co, Va

*Fauquier co, Va
John Makham 1770 Rent Roll
John Markham 1777 Rent Roll

James Markham 2 slaves, 3 horses, 6 cattle PP tax 1787
John Markham 14 slaves, 10 horses, 6 cattle Pptax 1787

*Stafford co, Va
James Markham 1723 Rent Roll
James Markham 1768 Rent Roll

John Markham 8 white, 1 dwelling, 1 other building 1785 Tax Roll

John Markham 15 slaves, 3 horses, 4 cattle, 2 wheeled carriages
      personal property tax 1787

John Markham 8 white souls 1 dwelling 1790 tax record

note-the Markhams in Stafford and Fauquier co, Va are descendants of the
Lewis Markham family group in Westmoreland co, Va

*Loudoun co PP 1787
Samuel Markin 4 horses, 4 cattle
note - at this point I do not have any ideas about who this Samuel Markin
might be.

1800 Census
note: the 1800 census has been lost and, to date, I have not found any
statewide collection of Virginia data to cover this period.

*Botetourt co, Va
1800 record- reconstructed from Tax Record (Va Genealogist)
John Markham
note- this is probably John (Jonathan) Markham, son of Arthur Markham of
Prince Edward co, Va. He is the brother of Thomas Markham of Bedford co, Va.

1810 Virginia Census and Supplemental Tax Records
     note: not a complete census.

William Markham pg 640	1m 0-10, 1m 16-26, 1f 16-26, no slaves
note- Markhams in Bedford and Botetourt co, Va are likely descendants of
the earliest Thomas Markham in Henrico co, Va 1636. Thomas and John
(Jonathan) Markham are sons of Arthur Markham Sr of Prince Edward co, Va

*Franklin co Va
James Marcom pg 315 4m 10-16, 1m 45+, 1f 26-45, 1f 45+ no slaves

*Lee co, Va
Reuben Markham 1 white, 1 horse (Tax Roll)
Samuel Markham 1 white, 1 horse (Tax Roll)
note- a good genealogy of Josiah Marcum and Mary Beales/Bales is prepared
and Josiah first appears in 1820 Lee co, Va. Recent research suggests that
Josiah Marcum was probably a son of John Markham of Bedford/Botetourt co, Va.
I am not presently clear on who Reuben and Samuel might be.

*Stafford co, Va
Allen W Markham pg 123 1m 26-45, 1f 16-26, 1f 45+, 9 slaves

				3 slaves
note- this Markham in Culpepper co, Va likely has a connection to the
Markhams who were originally in Westmoreland co, Va and then spread into
Stafford and Fauquier co, Va
