Descendants of Samuel Jeafferson I

280. LUNA ALDOLPHUS13 PRUETT (FRANCIS MARION12, HARRIETT ELIZABETH11 PRUITT, DIANNAH HILLSMAN10 FARRAR, ABNER9, THOMAS8, JUDITH7 JEFFERSON, THOMAS6, THOMAS5, SAMUEL4 JEAFFERSON III, SAMUEL3, JOHN2, SAMUEL1) was born April 17, 1883 in Pittsburg, Camp Co. Texas, and died September 23, 1969 in Roosevelt Co. New Mexico. He married ETHEL A. PETREE January 01, 1906 in Greer Co. Oklahoma, daughter of FRANCIS PETREE and NANCY ELLIS. She was born October 18, 1884 in Coryell Co. Texas, and died December 12, 1970 in Portales, Roosevelt Co. New Mexico.

Notes for L
UNA ALDOLPHUS PRUETT:
Luna Adolphus Pruett was born on the farm southeast of Pittsburg, Camp Co. Texas. His name was chosen by Grandma Whaley. He attended the country school at New Mine. Luna, often called Lunie, became close to his cousin, Ozie Dean Pruett (son of his dad's brother, John Perry Pruett) when he visited the Pruett family shortly before Ozie married in 1894. Luna and Ozie remained close throughout their lifetime. He was 14 when his mother died in 1897, and 18 when his family moved to Reed, Oklahoma Territory.

Luna's dad, F. M. Pruett, rented out some of his farmland in Greer County to Cicero and Nancy Petree who were parents of 17 children. F. M. Pruett fell in love with their 11th born, Macy Bell Petree, and married her in May 1905. "Aunt Macy" was loved by all who knew her and made a wonderful step-mother to the Pruett children. Luna soon fell in love with his step-mother Macy's younger sister, Ethel Petree, and they were married New Years Day 1906 in Reed, Oklahoma.

During the first months of their marriage Luna and Ethel rented a farm from his father a half mile west from F. M. and Macy's farm in Reed, Oklahoma. Luna joined the wagon train in August 1906 to stake out homesteads in Roosevelt Co. New Mexico. Luna homesteaded land 19 miles south and 5 miles east of Portales in Roosevelt Co. New Mexico. Luna and Ethel's first home was the standard hal dug-out. The pioneers to this new country had failures and many did not stay. Through the help of his dad, Luna bought out several homesteads, including some of his own kin. He and Ethel built a lovely sod house and moved out of the half dug-out. Luna and Ethel became parents of two daughters; Opal Irene in 1907 and Ione Caroline in 1909.

Luna was a very good business manager, as were his forefathers, and he did well financially. His wife Ethel was thrifty, energetic, very artistic, and loved by all. They were the leaders who helped the most with perpetuating the Pruett family reunions for so many years after the death of F. M. Pruett, who had started them.

Daughters Opal and Ione married two neighboring brothers from the Hitt family, originally from Hunt Co. Texas.

Luna and Ethel were visited by Haskell Pruett, son of cousin Ozie Dean Pruett, in 1942. By this time the original sod house had been plastered outside and was lovely and modern inside.

In the mid 1950's Luna Pruett accompanied Mrs. Douglas Stone and Mrs. Frank Kelt to the Longs Cemetery in Roosevelt Co. and was very helpful in identifying those buried in the unmarked graves there. During the years living near the town of Dora, he has seen it located at four different sites within Roosevelt County.

In 1956 Luna and Ethel drove from New Mexico to the funeral of his cousin Ozie Dean Pruett in Reed, Oklahoma.

Luna and Ethel left their homestead with eldest daughter Opal and her family and moved to 421 South Avenue G in Portales, New Mexico where they lived for several years before Luna died in 1969, and where Ethel remained until her death in 1970. Luna and Ethel are both buried in Portales, New Mexico.

Notes for V
IRGIL ETHEL PRUETT:
Virgil Ethel Pruett was born on on the farm home southeast of Pittsburg, Camp Co. Texas. Grandma Whaley had picked out one name if the baby would be a boy and another if the baby should by a girl. She used both names and Virgil was "stuck" with the girls name. However, he used only the initial "E." Virgil attended the country school at New Mine. He was 15 years old when the family moved to Reed, Oklahoma. Virgil traveled in the wagon train trip for homesteads in New Mexico in August 1906. He staked out his claim for 160 acres just east of where his brother Luna filed. He was within three months of being 21 years old. They built a long half-dugout across the line, in August 1906. That held the land for Virgil and also made it possible for him to live in one end of the dugout on his land and eat with Luna and Ethel. The filing papers were filed on his 21st birthday (November 4, 1906).

The 160 acres across the road to his north were relinquished by his cousin Ozie Pruett in 1907, to Joseph Jackson Jordan, whose son Henry Monroe Jordan had married Virgil's sister Dora Bell in 1900 (also living on a neighboring homestead), and his daughter Rosa Bell Jordan had married Virgil's brother Oscar Farrar Pruett in 1900 (both deceased in 1905). Living with the Jordans was Oscar Pruett's and Rosa Jordan's orphaned daughter, Evelyn "Evie" Mae Pruett. Evie was six years old and ready for school, but the only school was miles away on the prairie. Relatives thought it best for Evie to go stay with her paternal grandfather, Virgil's dad F. M. Pruett, and attend school in Reed, Oklahoma. Uncle Virgil took his niece for the trip up to Reed to live for six months with his dad and Macy.

Meanwhile the Jordan's had one more daughter for Virgil. Virgil Pruett 22, and Willie Dell Jordan 20, were married March 1, 1908 in Roosevelt Co. New Mexico.

A daughter, Lois Lena Pruett, was born in 1909, followed by a son, Cecil Paul Pruett in 1911.

Virgil, at age 32, died of food poisoning (Botulism) on April 23, 1918 in Reed, Greer Co. Oklahoma and is buried at Reed Cemetery. His monument is located near the grave of his father, Francis Marion Pruett.

The next year Virgil's son Cecil Paul Pruett died September 15, 1919 in Roosevelt Co. New Mexico and is buried at Longs Cemetery. Willie, widowed at age 30, never remarried and spent her last days as an invalid with their daughter Lois Fraze.

ILLIE DELL JORDAN:
Willie Dell Jordan was born in Wood Co. Texas in 1887 shortly after her parents moved there from Pike Co. Georgia. Two of her older siblings married two siblings from their close neighbor, Francis Marion Pruett's family. In 1900 brother Henry Monroe Jordan married Dora Belle Pruett, and sister Rosa Bell married Oscar Farrar Pruett (both died in 1905).

In 1907 Willie's parents moved to Roosevelt Co. New Mexico and bought Ozie Pruett's homestead near her brother Henry's. Another close neighbor was Virgil Pruett 21, younger brother of Oscar and Dora, who had staked his claim for 160 acres the previous year. Willie 20, and Virgil 22, were married March 1, 1908 in Roosevelt Co. and had two children.

Virgil died of food poisoning in 1918 in Reed, Greer Co. Oklahoma, and their son, Cecil Paul, died the next year in Roosevelt Co. New Mexico. Willie, widowed at age 30, never remarried. She lived on their farm and spent her last days as an invalid in the care of her daughter Lois Fraze.

Notes for O
DA MARION PRUETT:
Oda Marion was born on the family farm just south of Pittsburg in Camp Co. Texas. It is unknown where the name Oda came from, but it was chosen by Grandma Whaley, and Oda's middle name is after his father, Francis Marion Pruett. Oda, called Odie, was eight years old when his mother died. He went to school at the New Mine through the chart and about 5th grade. He was 13 when the family moved to Greer County, Oklahoma. He walked 2 1/2 miles to a country school, Sulphur, beginning in 1901 through 1905. He finished common school at Reed and was among the cousins who went to Baptist University at Blackwell, Oklahoma, 1908-1909.

In February 1910 Oda married Mary A. McLeran in Greer County. Mary was a wonderful girl, an orphan living with her relatives and going to school at Reed. She was a Christian and a schoolmate of Oda's. After their marriage they moved to Roosevelt Co. New Mexico in the neighborhood of his two brothers, Luna and Virgil. Oda and Mary had one child, a son, Leonard Pruett, born in 1912. Mary died in 1921 leaving Oda a widower with an eight year old son, the same age Oda had been when his mother died.

In July 1922 Oda remarried to Gladys Page. Gladys was a wonderful Christian woman who had grown up in Delta Co. Texas near some of Oda's cousins. Oda and Gladys lived on his homestead, south of Portales until March 1924 when they moved just before their first child, a son, Holice, turned one year old, to a vegetable farm near Plainview, Texas. They lived at this farm until after all their children finished high school and Wayland Baptist College. Claude Francis was born in 1925, and Lillie Pearl in 1927. In 1928 Oda's son, Leonard, from his first marriage died at the age of 16. Leonard is buried in Reed Cemetery near his mother Mary, who died seven years before him. In 1932 Oda and Gladys' youngest child Wanda was born.

After the children were grown Oda and Gladys were separated for about four years. Gladys graduated as nurse in the interim. Then she and Oda were remarried.

In their later years Oda and Gladys returned to 413 South Avenue B, in Portales, New Mexico, where they were living when Oda died in 1974 at age 85, after long suffering from emphysema. He was in bed for a long time before his death and Gladys said her nurses training was to take care of him. She remained loyal to him to his death. Gladys was much loved by all of her children and all Oda's kin.

Oda and Gladys Pruett are buried side-by-side with a joint headstone in Portales Cemetery, Roosevelt County, New Mexico.
