Her son J. F. Roney and daughter Mrs. H. Geary were with her at the time of her death. Mrs. Roney was born in London, England in 1819 and when 11 years of age came to this country with her parents and lived a few years in New York City. At the age of seventeen she was united in marriage to John roney and went to make her home in Virginia. A few years later they came west and located in southern Illinois then moved to the northern part of the state and located in Wauconda township, Lake County, becoming one of the pioneer memegers of our community. At this time all was wilderness and wild game abounded as also Indian tribes who often passed the house. They were industrious and soon added to their farm until it contained 480 acres which ws stocked with all kinds of livestock and Mr. and Mrs. Roney were knownfor many miles around for their genial hospitality to all and no stranger who ever passed their door and asked for food and lodging was refused. Mrs. Roney's husband passed away many years ago but she concluded to live on the old homestead and conducted the affairs of her estate until death, having her mental faculties to the last. Mrs. Roney was a kind-hearted and generous old lady but for the past five or six years has hardly been away from home being in feeble health although she was able to be up and about the house and yard until about three weeks before her death. She had lived a good life and attained a good old age but no matter how long the years death is sad but we trust that she has a better home than here on earth and her life's sufferings are over. Funeral was held from the Transfiguration Catholic Church on Wednesday Setp. 2? at 11 o'clock a.M. Rev. Father Woulfe officiatingoffering up a requiem high Mass and delivering a sermon full of instruction for all. Interment made in the family lot in the Catholic Cemetery in the same grave as her husband, his wish at the time of his death. Of her family, five children survive. One son, John F. Roney and four daughters Mrs. McGurren and Mrsl Murray who live in Chicago, Mrs John Mullen who resides in our village and Mrs. H. Geary, the youngest daughter who lives on the farm across the road from the old homestead and who took care of her mother and looked after her for the past several years. Besides the above there are forty-three grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. **** Tombstone Transfiguration Cemetery Wauconda IL John Roney Native of Co. Notes for Suzanne RONEY: Jim Wyman <jwyman@d211.org> Subject: Geary/Roney Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 08:13:37 -0500 Am also looking for information on the GEARY and RONEY families from Wauconda, Lake Co., IL Jim WYMAN Date: 10/11/98 7:49:06 AM Central Daylight Time From: jwyman@d211.org (Jim Wyman) Vicki, My great uncle John KNOX (1878-1932) married Cecelia GEARY ( ? -1974) on 20 July 1920. John KNOX was mayor of McHenry, IL at the time of his death in 1932. They had no children. Cecelia GEARY's parents were Henry GEARY (1848-1938) and Suzanne RONEY (1855-1931). I believe Cecelia had a sibling, but do not know the name. Am interested in any information you have on the RONEY family. Also, my great-grandmother Mary KNOX's sister Ellen KNOX COURTNEY married Henry COURTNEY in 1849. They lived near the MURRAY settlement on modern day Roberts Road south of Island Lake. Apparently there was a great deal of interaction between the Irish from this section and the McHenry Irish. Many of these Irish came to church at St. Patrick's in McHenry before Transfiguration was established. Jim WYMAN |

Notes for Henry F GEARY: Notes for Henry F GEARY: From: jwyman@d211.org (Jim Wyman) Reply-to: jwyman@d211.org Here is what I have on the Geary/Knox connection. Some of it I lifted off the gravestones at Transfiguration Cemetery. John Knox, my great uncle, and Cecelia Geary had no children. John Knox was mayor of McHenry at the time of his death in 1932. She lived until 1974. I would like to know if anyone has a wedding photo of them. The only photo I have of John Knox was taken when he was a boy. My mother, Mabel Knox Wyman, is John Knox's neice. His brother Michael (my mom's father) farmed south of McHenry just north of the Terra Cotta plant on Route 31. I am a teacher at Fremd High School in Palatine. I grew up in Crystal Lake.
