 Includes NotesNotes for Ewen MacAulay:
Grave at Sardis Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church south of Charlotte,Mecklenburg Co,N.C. Tombstone inscription: "Sacred To The Memory of Ewen MacAulay, Who Was born 5th of January 1715 and Departed This Life on 15th of October 1817, aged 102 years, 9 Months, and 10 Days".

In the good year 1745, a young man 30 years old living in the Highlands of Scotland refused to submit humbly to the changes in land tenure, and the other cruelties imposed on his people. For generations, these Highlanders had held their land in common under a chieftain. In other words, they practiced a sort of communism. But in 1745,all of this was changed. The English law of primogeniture was introduced among the crags and peaks of the liberty loving Scots. The land was handed over in high tracts to the nobles, who in turn, disregarding the rights of the common folks, proceeded to make game reserves out of the rugged mountain sides, and to push the people off the land.
But not only did the Scots have these economic injustices heaped upon them, but what was just as bad, some social restrictions were imposed repugnant to the ideals of free people. In 1715,the Scotch had been the ringleaders in an attempt to put "Bonny Prince Charlie" on the throne of England. This was called the Jacobite uprisings. Ill will smoldered among the English for a long time until 30 years later they decided to make Englishmen out of the Scotchmen. Besides the change in the land tenure, two notable prohibitions were introduced into the Highlands--it was forbidden to speak the native Gaelic and to wear the tribal costumes.
The 30-year old young man who refused to submit humbly to all this was named Ewen MacAulay. For his resistance,he was forced to flee to North Ireland. But that was no place for his turbulent spirit. On Erin's shore many of his comrades, and also of the Irish, had their goods confiscated for resisting English tyranny. One day this same Ewen MacAulay had an altercation with one of the guards placed over the confiscated goods. He took the guard's gun away from him and gave him a good beating. For this display of courage,MacAulay was outlawed, and a bounty placed on his head. He made his escape, and some time later sailed on the good ship Sullivan for the wild shores of North America. He settled on MacAlpine Creek in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Family tradition places his time of arrival as sometime in 1750.
The Sullivan's 1750 passenger manifest, located in the archives at Raleigh,N.C.,does not show a Ewen MacAuley listed in that year. There is good reason for this. Ewen ,as an outlaw, had to stowaway on the Sullivan and his needs for the trip were provided by friends and relatives who say that he hid inside a "Hogshead" for the journey.
