McCartney's of Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Ephraim McCartney was born September 20, 1772 in Lancaster Co., PA. Ephraim’s father came from Ireland. Ephraim married Ann Sanford in Mifflin Co., PA, in 1790. Ann was born about 1767; also in Mifflin Co. Ann’s father was Abraham Sanford. Ephraim and Ann had ten or eleven children, eight of whom, six boys and two girls who lived to adulthood. The oldest boy was Robert Isaac McCartney. Ephraim McCartney died at the age of 52 in Washington Co., PA, September 9, 1825, and his wife Ann at the age of 86, in the same county, in the early part of January, 1853.

Michael Runk (whose father’s name was also Michael), was born in 1765, in Lancaster Co., PA. Michael married Mary Schowalter, her senior by three months, in 1786, in Lancaster Co., PA. Mary Schowalter, who was of German descent, was born in 1765, in Lancaster Co., PA. Michael and Mary had nine or ten children, seven of whom lived to adult age. Lydia Martha Runk was the fourth child and the third of the girls. Michael Runk died at the age of 54 in Westmoreland Co., PA, April 4, 1819, and his wife Mary at the age of 81, in Stark Co., OH, April 29, 1846.

Robert Isaac McCartney was born September 21, 1791, in Mifflin Co., PA, and Lydia Martha Runk, July 1, 1794, in Lancaster Co., PA. They were married December 31, 1811, in Westmoreland Co., PA. They had eight children, the first two being girls and the others boys. Robert McCartney died at the age of 46 in Cardington township, Morrow Co., (then Marion), December 24, 1837, and his wife Lydia at the age of 76, in Wilton, Muscatine Co., IA, August 22, 1870. During a twenty-three year time period from 1810 to 1833, Robert and Lydia moved within PA from Bedford Co. to Westmoreland Co., back to Bedford Co. and finally to Washington Co. On August 14, 1833 the family started for Ohio, and arrived at Ashland, August 20. They started on the 26th for Washington township, Morrow Co., OH, and arrived there on the 28th. They moved from this township to Cardington township, in the same county, August 25, 1835. Lydia, after the death of her husband, returned to Washington township on March 31, 1838. Lydia started September 13, 1852 for Iowa.
